Re: carb float pin
G'day all A word of caution re using a Grose needle and seat. I purchased a new HS4 carby for my blown MM from Midel and it was fitted with a Grose needle and seat to accomodate for the extra fuel consumption. When the dyno man was setting things up he suddenly ran around and switched off the motor....

Re: Play in the front wheel
Can somebody explain to me in simple terms why a front wheel fitted with roller bearings which are adjusted with a SLIGHT preload, can be subject to premature failure when compared to diff pinion bearings with a much higher preload regardless of the reason for this adjustment. It is not unusual for ...

Phil
I based my recommendation on my long practised proceedures which have generally recommended a slight preload. There may be particular installations which recommend otherwise. See link.

Re: Play in the front wheel
I have tapered roller bearings with Wolseley brakes and have adjusted them as per instructions from most car manufacturers - with slight pre-load and no play. This is also as done with diff pinion tapered roller bearings.

Re: Play in the front wheel
If you can get somebody to do the twisting then place your finger between the brake drum and backing plate. If there is no relative movement between these then the problem is probably trunnions. If you are able to feel relative movement between the drum and backing plate then possibly loose wheel be...

Re: Rocker cover cap
Declan Having given thought to the similarity of our closed crankcase vacuum, I recalled having sourced info from the MGA Guru site re radial clearance for the scroll for MGA and Magnette motors. I have attached a link to the MGA Guru site. If you go to MG/212 it quotes that the radial clearance sho...

Re: Rocker cover cap
Budgie I am not that familiar with A Series donks however Richard (IslipMinor), Philthehill and Declan have opinions which may be of help. Assuming the cap is correct there are other reasons for a leak ie. worn bores and/or rings leading to excessive crankcase pressure, excessive gap at the crank sc...

Re: Rocker cover cap
Declan Assuming the manifold vacuum for both our motors is the same at a max. of about 29" WG (except that possiblity your worn buterfly spindles may have a bearing), it would appear that considering the sealed crankcase vac. is 4.8" WG for both, I guess we can assume the cross sectional a...

Re: Rocker cover cap
Hi all For what it's worth I have chosen to throw my hat in the ring. When I built my side valve motor I decided to attack the problem of rear crank oil leaks and came up with the solution outlined. I chose to replace the tappet cover with a machined alloy one with a fitting to accept 10 mm. oil pro...

Re: Phil and Co. Guide reaming?
It can be messy and difficult to thoroughly clean the swarf and dust from machinery. The fine particles can easily be inhaled with detrimental results. This is why I always use a vacuum cleaner when machining cast iron to get rid of the mess at the source rather than all over the machinery and anywh...

Re: Phil and Co. Guide reaming?
Cutting fluids or coolant should not be used when machining or cutting cast iron whether by lathe tools, milling cutters, reamers or any other method.

Re: Phil and Co. Guide reaming?
Rob When reaming oversize it is not good for the reamer to take much more than one thou per cut preferably 1/2 thou to really look after your reamer blades. The adjustable reamers that Declan refered to have a taper on the end. As to reducing the head size I have used valves with a head dia. of 35 m...

Can someone involved in the MMOC administration explain why garbage like the last post and others is allowed on this forum. Most members pay good hard earned money for their membership not to see this rubbish!

Re: Size of pictures
When posting pics from Photobucket they do not necessarily have to be 'In the Public Domain'. When creating a new album there is a choice of ticking a 'Private' box which I always do before completing the creation of a new album.

Re: Size of pictures
Mike I recently posted a pic from my Photobucket account the same way as I had done previously without problems. Re: lower trunnion; upgrade - extra grease nipples
Phil I did take into account the flattened tips of the thread (see my post of Fri Jan. 13 at 12:02) and guessed the thread was probably 3/4" nominal dia. Perusing the link you attached to your last post the only 3/4"UNS threads refered to have 14, 18, 24 OR 27 TPI. I have also looked caref...

Re: lower trunnion; upgrade - extra grease nipples

The dia. of 11/16" Whit. is 0.6875". I have measured the MM thread at 0.721" so I cannot see how 11/16" W. would be anything like a proper fit into a trunnion that accepts a thread 0.721" dia.?

Re: lower trunnion; upgrade - extra grease nipples
Following Rob's question re am I making new ones I tried to determine the thread out of curiosity. The MM swivel pin thread measured 0.721 inches dia. and was 11 TPI. I could not find a reference to this thread. It may be that if the thread was not machined to present a flattened outside it may be 1...

Re: lower trunnion; upgrade - extra grease nipples
The trunnion shown is the original bronze one from my 1952. The extra grease nipple is fitted opposite the grease slot. It was my intention to use it on the new swivel pins when they were removed to fit Declans seals. However even though they were a good fit to the MM swivel pin they were quite loos...
