Re: Fuel Pump problem?
Hmmm thank you for your replies. I think the valves are fine - the inlet valve unseats when blowing, and seats when sucking. And the outlet valve does the reverse. I will have to test with some fuel from a container next time I go to get petrol, unless anyone has other ideas. It might just work OK w...

Fuel Pump problem?
Hi folks,
I just rebuilt a spare SU fuel pump and though I haven't tested it with fuel yet, it seems that connecting it to a battery it is blowing air out of both the outlet AND inlet pipes. I thought the inlet pipe should suck, not blow! Did I do anything wrong??
Thanks.

Re: blocked pipe
Dear friends, I did indeed have a water pump gasket in my scullery and, thinking further about Roy's doom-laden warnings about breakdowns on dark and stormy nights, and now that the evenings are drawing in, you will be pleased to hear that I whipped out the pump today and replaced the "ghastly&...

Split screen rubbers and chrome
After reading complaints about the poor quality of split screen front window rubbers, does anyone know where I can get a good quality one? Also, is it better to get original parts re-chromed or can I get decent new ones from somewhere as I have read lots of complaints about the quality of those as w...

Re: Fuel pump filter removal
Thank you for that. The valves are now out but washers look very ropy
Also, back to my question as to whether anyone knows if a split diaphragm would make the pump work overly hard? It does seem to beat very fast most of the time.
Thanks

Re: Fuel pump filter removal
Thank you for your comments and advice. The filter and its housing did have a lot of stuff that looked like coffee granuals in it but the pump still runs too rapidly to my mind. There is no leak anywhere that I can see and it stops ticking when the float is full (ignition on, engine not running) but...

Fuel pump filter removal
Hi,
Does anyone know if the fuel pump filter can be removed without removing the pump from the car? It looks like it might be possible....
Thank you,
Pete

Yes, that thought has already crossed my mind. In fact I think I have a pump gasket in my scullery. If so I will add it to the boot collection.............

Re: blocked pipe
Gentlemen, thank you for your replies. It was, indeed, the by-pass hose I was talking about. Funnily enough, there was a small pebble(!) stuck in the hose which may have caused the problem. I don't think the rest of the system can be too bad as the car has never overheated. Also, the water that came ...

Re: bouncy speedo!
My speedo needle swung up and down until one day there was a loud shrieking/grating noise and the needle stopped working altogether. The cable had broken so I fitted a new one.The needle was then steady for a while but has returned to swinging - at about 60mph it oscillates between 40 and 80! I see ...

blocked pipe
Hello, I went to replace the small hose between the water pump and the cylinder head as it was perished and leaking. Then I saw the water pump pipe was completely blocked! It took me a good 15 minutes to clear it with an allen key (I needed something with a right angle to get into the pipe). It was ...

Re: removing front damper
Yes, you did sir, but it was Phil who provided the crucial detail of using "some pressure (but not excessive) to push the trunnion (Part No SUS137/8) eye rearwards and at the same time twisting it whilst also making sure that the front trunnion bush (Part No: SUS144) remains on and at the front...

Re: removing front damper
Having had to do this job again (serves me right for getting a second-hand damper which failed within weeks) I confirm Phil the Hill is right - the trick is to pull the top trunnion backwards and towards you while twisting it clockwise. It then does slide off. But that rear bush is difficult. It was...

Re: removing front damper
Crikey! I wish I could just slide it off. When I undo the rear nut, lockwasher and thick washer the trunnion won't move backwards at all..........I just sweated buckets and got scared I would pull the whole car off the jack under the arm (yes it was on an axle stand as well) . There must be a knack ...

Re: removing front damper
Yes, that's what I did. It came off very easily by removing damper bolts and wiggling forwards off the trunnion - the damper came through the slot in the wing with no trouble. No way could I pull the trunnion off backwards!

removing front damper
General advice is to support car on axle stands, jack up suspension arm, knock back tab washer at rear of top link pin and remove said nut, washers and rear bush, then "slide top trunnion off pin". This I could not do as not enough movement in kingpin/trunnion. I found the answer to be remo...

Re: speedometer now reads high after cable change
They are funny things. My speedo needle reads accurately up to about 40mph and then starts to oscillate. By 60mph it oscillates wildly between 40 and 80mph on the dial! Crazy!

Re: funny noise from engine
Thanks for your replies. No it is not an exhaust leak. When I said a cross between buzzing and hissing, it is nearer to buzzing - or even a very light scraping. Very difficult noise to describe. I will try the take off fanbelt and see what happens (apart from overheat!) Wondering if waterpump, dynam...
