Actually when he wasn't having one of his carpet-chewing episodes the Fuhrer could be a very effective communicator.

Re: Are members allowed to use the facilities at the MMOC unit

Andrew, thanks for the response. Hopefully the facility use can be discussed through all the club channels, including the website, magazine and meetings.

Having put the cat among the pigeons I must now admit that my interest in the new HQ is purely academic as I live too far away.

Re: TV advertising

The Oak Furniture Land ad really bugs me. Oak trees are magnificent, hard wood and they grow slowly. Britain's oak forests have never really recovered from the Napoleonic wars, when oak was desperately needed to build warships. Cutting them down for something as mundane as furniture appals me.

Re: Are members allowed to use the facilities at the MMOC unit

This thread seems to have digressed a bit, and the original question remains unresolved, who can use facilities and when. There seems to be a complete disconnect between the club and the website, each operating in splendid isolation. I noticed this before when I queried the relationship between the ...

Re: "I used to have one of them.."

It's a Cossack Dnieper, 650cc. It does have the reverse gear, but not drive to the sidecar wheel. Now I've dismantled the engine it doesn't look too bad so it should be a viable project, hopefully.

Hello Sid, yes it does have a sidecar, but not much sidecar floor!

Of all the luck!

I've just been given a russian motorbike but after twenty years in someone's garden it remains to be seen whether its an asset or a liability.

Re: Mystery Wheel

'The centre boss was somehow kept static and didn't rotate with the wheel'... The static centre bosses were attached to a long tube which passed down inside the column and was clamped to the steering mechanism. This carried the wiring and when old and worn could be a nightmare of involuntary horn bl...

Re: jacking points on a 1954 minor?

Iffy indeed, that's why they changed them. Even so the later ones aren't brilliant either. On the early cars the jacking areas are likely to have been repaired and few people will have reinstated the jacking points. Going back to your original question about a possible purchase I wouldn't worry if t...

Early type jacking points, there you go. Personally I'd use a scissor jack under arm or axle for roadside wheel changes.

Factory workshop manual and Haynes manual (factory one is better). I keep two copies of each, clean ones in the house for planning a job, horrible manky ones in the garage for when I'm working.

Re: Lubricating the water pump

Thanks for the replies. Sadly this pump doesn't have a grease nipple. Adding lubricant to the water side will help on one side of the seal, how far in will depend how far in it can creep against the seal, and the pump has not been used for several years so a bit of creeping might be possible. Holts ...

Lubricating the water pump

Having some water pump noise I have been advised to put some brake fluid in the coolant to provide lubrication. I've never heard of this before but I suppose brake fluid would mix with the water and not harm metal or rubber. Has anyone heard of this before? Anyone tried it? Does it work?

If you are getting the pipes and cylinders from one of the usual minor suppliers they should be able to supply the correct bolts too.

I've just rebuilt a 948 box including an 803 long stick rear end. I can't help with your first two questions but I was certainly able to get all the 948 parts I needed, some new some secondhand. There is a good exploded view on the Moss parts website.

I've heard this said about farmers but is it any more than rumour or supposition? I would have thought that anyone with acres of farmland would have plenty of space to lose a carcass. It seems perverse to leave it exposed.

Re: Another id for sale on e bay

It appears to be a '53 or '54. It might have a '57 reg for legitimate reasons such as being used abroad for the first few years, or it might be a typo when it was put on the DVLA database. DVLA were hopelessly innaccurate for the first couple of decades, and not much better now. Best check would be ...

Re: Head gasket issue?

In view of your comment on extreme loss of both oil and water I agree with Rab that the head should be removed and the car not used to avoid possible damage. If your garage is familiar with cars like this it should take 2-3 hours to change a head gasket so not a vast bill, assuming all else is well.

Re: Free tools saved from the skip.

I'd be wary of parting with duplicates unless you are really stuck for space. As an example my usual whit ring spanners are too thick to fit the propshaft rear joint but I found an odd thin walled ring spanner in the bottom of the box which fits a treat. Goodness knows where it came from but worth k...

Re: Head gasket issue?

This does sound like head gasket symptoms, although the creamy stuff is usually under the oil filler cap, is that what you meant? You might also get an oily sheen in the radiator coolant. The best check is a compression test, if you put your location there might be a local member with a tester who c...
