Re: fan blade
Just ONE blade. Which obviously has two arms to keep it balanced.... Note that a Mini blade cannot be used - it pushes air rather the pull required for a Minor.

VOSA would never say a garage does dodgy MOTs - but you DO owe him £50 since you didn't sell the car to him......

Take the sill covers off as a first move - and inspect the crossmember very carefully. Poking hard with a blunt chisel!!

2nd vote for the cut down manifold. The HIF44 is a good move, and will help with future upgrades such as a 'big valve' head.

The head gasket can't go on 'wrong way round' - the stud holes won't allow it. And we surely all know by now not use nasty 'gasket goo'.....

Nothing to do with adjustment - that just gives a long pedal. As above - seized cylinders.....or oil on the shoes. Off with the drums !

For £50 is this worth all the hassle? Give him the cash and get him off your back. There really is no point arguing over such a trivial amount.

Cost of engine repairs are insignificant compared to welding/bodywork repairs. Don't fret about the engine too much till you get the car fully surveyed for whatever else it needs.

Re: 1275 exhaust manifold questions.
On that otherwise standard Sprite (is it??) engine - I would not spend a lot on a fancy exhaust - the gains will be not be worth the money unless you modify the engine further (camshaft + better head ).

Re: A friend of mine . . .
If you see it but can't catch it - use a hole saw to make a hole (obviously... ) in the base of the bellhousing to make retrieval easier. If you can't see it - stop worrying about it - it's a thin washer and even if caught up by the flywheel it won't last long in there!

Re: Rocker lubrication
If it's being 'lightly lubricated' then oil must be getting through. Probably right enough for parts in good condition with no slop in the shaft or rockers.

The whirr pretty much confirms what Phil says above - the teeth on the flywheel have worn away... Next time it does this - turn the engine 90 degrees by hand and then try again.

Re: Best/alternative oil for Carburettor?
Just a teaspoon or two of 20W50 to start with - they don't need 'filling up'. Some modified engines respond better to 3-in-one, and as Phil says EP90 has been used by the Works where the cars are run on rough ground and don't want the pistons flapping up and down.

Don't use 'sandpaper' - very fine 'wet & dry' is what you need. But will the surface not improve with just polishing mop and good cutting compound?

Good point about 'old petrol' - didn't know it had stood for 5 years. It will never start on fuel that old. Still try the eggcup with fresh petrol (or frankly a good squirt of 'carb and choke'cleaner will have a similar effect- it will tell you if the engine is basically willing to go.

The spitting back indicates more than a 'weak mixture' - and in any case this 'number of flats business' is just a guess. When cold starting with 'choke' pulled it has no relevance whatsoever. Check the compressions...

Re: Ignition switch
Why were you changing the switch in the first place? This may be a clue... You need a meter (or test lamp)to check if volts are getting to the starter solenoid - it may be faulty -or needing to be earthed/connections cleaned. Does the starter always work if you press the button on the solenoid?

Re: Brake pipe union threads
And the brake pressure switch T piece....... Rover made a mess of the later Mini (and probably others in the range) by using M10 x 1 fittings in some places and UNF in others - but at least they dropped the BSF. UNF and M10 are particularly dangerous because it is just about possible to convince you...
