Re: Stainless exhaust
I had a stainless set from ESM that was embarressing loud. So I bought a second set and used the silencer as a second silencer at the rear. No boy-racer sounds now.

Re: R.p.m. at 60 mph with 3.9 compared to 4.22
When referring to the original spec it's worth remembering thet would have been of 5.20/14 crossplies which are about 3% bigger than the 145/14 most people run now, the differnce between 4.22 and 3.9 is 8% so even the original cars would have been almost half way to a 3.9 diff. If you are worried a...

Re: R.p.m. at 60 mph with 3.9 compared to 4.22
I did not have fuel consumption in mind. I my my opinion our cars are one of the most fuel efficient of oldtimers. It was about the health of my engine and my ears.

Re: R.p.m. at 60 mph with 3.9 compared to 4.22
A reduction of only 260 rpm at 60 mph seems unwise with the current 3.9 diff prices.

Re: R.p.m. at 60 mph with 3.9 compared to 4.22
So the benefit is 260 rpm at 60. Thanks Peted. I'll check what the difference is in 4th and 5th gear on my VW to get an idea.

R.p.m. at 60 mph with 3.9 compared to 4.22
Could anybody tell me what the engine rpm is doing 60 mph with a 3.9 and with my current 4.22 diff. (1098 cc with ribbed case gearbox and 145/14 tyres)
Thanks.
Michael
Thanks.

No, I resurfaced with an assumption. I'll follow that and will report back. It all takes a while

Re: Recon 1098 rumble.
It could well be resonance of the stainless exhaust as Jowettjavelin suggested, combined with stiff short rubber exhaust straps. Will let you know.

Re: One-valve windscreen washer pump?
I suppose 'S' is for suction, and 'J' for jets . But this new pump has no valve. What about valves?

One-valve windscreen washer pump?
The screenwasher is inoperative. So I got a replacement check valve and pump from ESM. The new valve is in and an exact copy (photo) of the one it replaced, but still no screenwash. The new pump (photo) seems to have no internal valve. Does the original pump have an internal valve? Any displacement ...

Re: Electronic ignition
The great advantage of electronic points is that some play in the dizzy shaft bearings eliminates the points gap and timing going all over the place. It renewes a tired dizzy.

Re: Recon 1098 rumble.
I renewed the spigot bush when I reassembled the engine. Further I really doubt it is hard engine support rubbers. It really sounds like bottom end rumble and, like Phil said, main bearings. I’m now just driving my dear Morris until there will damage visible when I take the engine apart. Again… A lo...

Re: Recon 1098 rumble.
Mounts are new and rock hard. I'll remove the steady bar. If that's the cure I will post it here. But it really really sounds like bottom e d rumble. When I was twenty I had a A55 Cambridge that I drove much to 'agitated'. It rumbled for a long time untill we went uphill full throttle and within sec...

Thanks Bill. I'll keep that in mind. Phil also mentioned main bearings. But the mains measured correct. Was it an A-series engine, that crack?

Re: Recon 1098 rumble.
At 3000-4000 rpm throttle closed and then opening slightly it is loudest and gradually disappears at full throttle. Third and fourth gear.

Thanks for trying to help Jowett. Alas, the exhaust is free from the body everywhere, except for two rubber straps.

Re: Recon 1098 rumble.
So I took the crankshaft back to the machine shop/reconditioner and we measured the crank with his micrometer. All seemed done correctly 0,01 undersize. For a second opinion I took the crankshaft to another shop and had it measured. Turned out all on the minimum side of the the specification, but ne...
