Re: Redex

The problem is that almost all lead substitutes simply reduce the effect of valve seat recession not stop it. Only tetraboost actually stops it but by putting harmful lead back in petrol.

Re: Advice please on brake upgrade

Twas a very good Ital engine indeed, the best standard 1275 I've ever had until it was massively over heated on the auto bahn thanks to a stuck thermostat and a que of traffic! Still at least it gave me the push to pull it out and build it properly, should be at 1330cc next week!

Re: marina/ital

None of the Ital A+ engines would have 4 ring pistons, they all used the 3 ring design. You also shouldn't have the casting window in a Marina or Ital engine. This was only present in some Midget engines and those without the window are very desireable. The pistons are probably a hepolite item so ri...

Re: Redex

The price of additive quickly mounts up as the more effective types are quite expensive. Why not put a few quid aside every time you fill up and you'll soon have enough for an unleaded head if you ever need one? Most Minors don't cover enough miles at enough speed to ever worry about valve seat rece...

"for moderate power increases - including a 1275 engine in standard form, driven sensibly" - You have personal experience of a 1275 Minor, I take it, or is this a 'mate down the pub/friend of a friend type opinion? My minor with a 1300 Ital engine (HS6, mg metro head, LCB) is fine with st...

If you take the oil filler plug out to observe the level or just fill from empty with a measured amount it will be fine!

Re: 5 speed box with a 1098 ?

I wouldn't buy the kit from Moss, it is the same kit Birmingham developed. You can retain the mechanical linkage with the kit from Birmingham or other suppliers. However it uses an extension which isn't brilliant. Using a concentric clutch slave with the JLH master cylinder bracket is the best setup...

Re: Impossible - torque steer on rear wheel drive!

Well I didn't think you'd agree! I really think you should drive some minors with any of the ARB kits that have been available fitted. They all do the same thing. The bump stop is a bit of an issue, especially as they are so tall, but there should still be at least 1.5" between the bum stop and...

Re: Impossible - torque steer on rear wheel drive!

It is off topic, but because of your original comment about the ARB. The rear springs on a Morris are only soggy if they are old and tired. New springs should be firm and more so than the front of the car. The soft front suspension makes any pitching under cornering worse and an ARB helps with this....

Re: Impossible - torque steer on rear wheel drive!

what do the wheels look like (location-wise front to rear) using the wheel arch as a reference? i know springs usually have 3 straps/clips sort of keeping the leaves together. 2 one side of the axle and 1 the other. i can never remember which way around they're meant to be, i recall it's meant to b...

Re: Impossible - torque steer on rear wheel drive!

But the problem is that the rear is already stiffer than the front. The ARB stops the front wheel camber going increasingly +ve. Dialling in more -ve camber will help but if there's still loads of body roll it won't help much as the camber will still become increasingly +ve. Stiffening the rear of a...

ABP would be the standard needle but that air filter would probably make it a little lean at the top end.

Re: Track rod end

When you get the old nut off it might be worth cleaning the taper in the steering arm and on TRE with thinners or brake cleaner so that it grips better when pushed down and you don't get the same problem again.

It's also worth checking your gearbox doesn't have Hypoid gear oil in which wrecks them over time.

Re: Impossible - torque steer on rear wheel drive!

This is very common, it is either loose U-bolts or the axle has been bolted down without locating it properly against the spring so it slides about on the spring perches. Anti roll bars do not increase understeer on vehicles with a leaf spring rear end and independent front suspension. They reduce u...

ESM sell red rubber grease, get them with the cylinders. Don't pull the piston completely out of these new cylinders as they are a pain to refit!

Re: Will a 19 year old get insured on a 1380?

I had a 1990 318iS 16v when I was 19 and my insurance was well under £1k even though it was lowered. The amount of crashes one particular model suffers affects insurance which is why a Peugot 106 can be expensive to insure. You need to hunt down a specialist insurer.
