Re: Fuel Catalysts
The additives that have passed independent testing are PROVEN to work. If you want to use an additive - it's worth using one of those. Bear in mind that others available on the market were tested and FAILED the independent tests - many making no improvement at all compared to the baseline 'unprotect...

Didn't know eBay allowed content substitution once an item number had been assigned. Yes - it does happen that people re-use an advert. Not just the classified ones either! For an auction, it is just about outside of the rules, as ebay say that if you advertise it on an auction format, it needs to ...

Re: Constant "choke", no matter what
The door windows are missing their weather strips, so I don't want doors full of water. The doors will get water inside, even with the weather strips - just at a a slower rate! The inside bottom of the door needs to have plenty of drain holes, and plenty of waxoil (or similar stuff) for rust protec...

I hate the initial period after you've bought a car that's been off the road for a bit, EVERYTHING goes wrong! Don't call it running in or commissioning, call it a "shake-down" period.. rather like you get after a big rebuild, things will happen. The advantage of the shake-down term, is t...

[q]They won't insure me until I am permanently living here for three years. [/q] Discrimination against an EU citizen moving from one country to another doesn't sound like a formal policy to me - maybe a misunderstanding on behalf of whoever at FJ you spoke to?! If you don't get a positive answer on...

the 12 month thing isn't correct (I belive is resolved according to your other post). If you have problems with the club member insurance scheme, you can also contact club office and ask for assistance - there were some teething problems with club scheme when FJ / AON joined together but much less t...

Re: Rebuild saloon from scratch!
Hey Verity, Starting with a fully stripped car certainly isn't the normal way! Prior to a major resto I would normally recommend that the car is band-aided and driven for a few months - that way the owner can get a feel for whether they want to keep the running gear standard, and whether any of it n...

Re: brake master cylinder advice
I just want to confirm that from the pedal end rod that you cant move this by hand before I refit the cylinder? Do you mean that you can't push the m/c piston into the m/c? It should be possible by hand, but it's hard so normally I would use a big crosshead screwdriver into the hole where the rod f...

Re: Alternativer use of Morris minor piston
The idea behind having the vacuum lift the piston rather than doing it directly with the cable is that with the latter setup getting on the gas too quickly will cause the engine to stutter which makes it more difficult for use in the street. IIRC, with the SU carb the mixture gets richer as soon as...

Principals checks I need to do everyday on the car apart from water and oil? The list will be different from everyone... and it depends where you can do the work and what tools you have access to. Hopefully the seller will be helpful (with tools and space on driveway?) for the day-1 checks! On firs...

Re: Brake lines flaring
I've just done a copuple of dozen pipe flares this week using a 'Laser' flaring tool - looks similar to your one that broke, but it's better quality, and in a much nicer blue plastic case (I actually thought it was a Sealey item.. doh) I did consider buying one of the professional jobbies, but ended...

That car looks good for the price - I hope it turns out to be great! The seats are not what most people would want but if that's the biggest issue, then you've not got much to worry about. Good luck on the journey! 200 miles a day is not really a lot, but for a recently purchased classic, it is wort...

Re: dual circuit master cylinder.
I wanted the dual circuit to limit the possibility of a total brake failure Having had total brake failure a few times in my life (including once on a Minor coming down A MASSIVE HILL) I understand why it's important to avoid total brake failure, but am still VERY dubious about some of the claims o...

Re: Opened up the thermostat housing and theres no thermostat
Using a bypass hose in place of the heater is a bad idea unless the heater valve is closed - however in combination to a missing thermostat I'm not sure if it would cause the normal issues. Basically the interior heater gives some flow restriction and acts like the normal radiator. Just adding a byp...

Re: Dynamo Failure
Nothing lasts for ever, but the original dynamo / regulator box is 10 times more reliable than an alternator. The downside is if you do a lot of stop/start traffic in winter (lights and heater on etc..) you can get a weak battery. That's easily solved by very occasional use of a battery charger, and...

The frustration is understood - the committee are Minor owners just like everyone else and some have had first hand experience. However, the rules are in place to protect the club, to allow it to continue and provide all the services that we can get. At the end of the day the club rules are put in p...

Re: dual circuit master cylinder.
I'd certainly agree that a remote reservoir adds some safety: 1) easier to check level, therefore checked more often 2) more volume (assuming you have a decent size one) therefore more capable to cope with a small fluid loss. As for m/c from a donor vehicle with split braking circuit.. I would want ...

Re: Unblocking oil ways
one possibility is that the rocker shaft mounting posts have been put in the wrong place. One of them should have an oilway that lines up with the oilway through the head - if it's been put in the wrong place, there's be no oil flow to the rocker shaft. The oil flow is up through the post and along ...

Re: If William Morris were alive today
Nuffield's leading guys were allowed to innovate, invest & to bring new technology, and that's what made the group successful (and removing that being a key part of the downturn when Lord took over) therefore I'd not be so sure he's have no interest in the modern car industry. There certainly wa...
