Re: stop leak oil addertive

For my oil leak Roy kindly advised me at the National Rally that: I find a oil filler cap that's vented/breathes (this was achieved for £3 at the rally but are available for ~£5 from parts suppliers). And/Or Use a longer pipe to go from the rocker cover breather to point down (with the chest swan-ne...

Re: rear leaf spring maintainance

I was told a good use for old engine oil is to slap it on the springs, haven't tried it though! ;)

Re: Welding for Novices

I can't offer much advice as I'm in a similar position, learning many mechanical jobs and resenting paying other folks to fix my car if it needs welding. I've been asking around and have been told everything from "I could teach you MIG in half an hour" to "oh no that'll take you years...

Re: Spotted today.

Saw a lovely traveller in Cirencester today that I've already posted on a Facebook group. I've seen a couple of Moggies around my area but have never bumped into any owners.

Re: Anyone one from down south going to the nationals? :)

On second thought, I might just take the A-roads straight up through Leicester, Newark-on-Trent, Doncaster and York. It's not like II'll be doing more than 55mph anyway.

Stupid idea?

Re: Anyone one from down south going to the nationals? :)

I'm coming up from down south, although quite far west (Cirencester, Gloucestershire). If I see any other Minors on the road I'll be sure to stick to the back of them, assuming they don't have upgraded engines or 5-speed boxes I can't keep up with of course! I believe it'll be A417 to Gloucester, M5...

Re: Engine - Flutter or Misfiring

Sorry for the double post but I'd just like to ask if there is anything I should bear in mind for reassembly as I've never done the head before. I'm aware of the following: Grease the thermostat cover bolts. Clean top of block - glass scraper and oil at hand. Clean bottom of head - ditto. Head on. T...

Re: Engine - Flutter or Misfiring

Phew! Done but it did take a while. I did a very small amount very cautiously with the 'cheat', then coarse grinding paste, then fine paste, the cleaned up with a touch of oil and a clean rag. Will look at reassembling it all another night. I've been grinding/sanding any rust down and repainting eve...

Re: Engine - Flutter or Misfiring

I think the oval effect is just the camera. I don't have the equipment to re-cut or the budget or time to send it off - got to get to the national! Perhaps a lot of elbow grease and coarse grinding paste before the fine?

Re: Engine - Flutter or Misfiring

Cleaned up the head a bit, haven't done the valves themselves yet and they're very black and crusty, might just fit a full new set. The old head gasket was shiny grey and had a weird rubber layer to it that's left an imprint, possibly aluminium? http://i.imgur.com/VQ5SOPB.jpg http://i.imgur.com/tKeO...

Re: Engine - Flutter or Misfiring

Haha, yes, perhaps I was too subtle in my description of the power loss. I'm new to all this!

Thanks guys. Should I run with 15-thou gaps even with additive?

Re: Engine - Flutter or Misfiring

Is it worth getting all new valves or just the one and grind the existing ones in?

Went through the ignition system again, no problems.

Then took the plunge and did a compression test. 160, 30, 160, 160. Uh oh. Head off...

Re: Engine - Flutter or Misfiring

Topped up/overflowed the dash pot, gave various bits a poke. Cleaned out a bit of grime from bit with the float and ran some cleaner through the carb. Played with the mixture a bit (it was a little lean, I think) and took the rocker cover off for an inspection and gapped the valves (all dead on 0.01...

Engine - Flutter or Misfiring [Now Valve Replacement]

Hi folks, My 4-door 1098 saloon has been driving beautifully up until now. However while out on Sunday I experienced a quite sudden loss of power and what I thought felt like misfiring but after limping it home it seems to run well idle and revving while stationary. I've checked the distributor cap,...

Re: found this in my junk

Oh! One of those switch panels was in my Minor when I bought it, couldn't work out what on earth it was supposed to be hooked up to though, none of the switches appeared to do anything. Perhaps they were extra lights removed at some point or I've unwittingly unplugged heated screens.

:-?

The majority of my experiences with ESM have been good, although I sometimes feel their delivery rates are a little steep for <£60.

Living about 45mins from Bull Motif is useful, very friendly folk. :)

Re: Soudproofing my Minor

I did the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago, but with less material. I used a single 30 sheet pack of Silent Coat 2mm focussed around the front wheel-arches, bulkhead, gearbox tunnel and the floor. I've read in a fair number of places that 20% panel coverage is enough for a significant differen...
