Rear end whine

Hi all, Earlier this month I experienced the joy of a snapped halfshaft for the first time! Luckily I had a spare. I had been running a 4.55 differential, so I took this "opportunity" to change the diff for the 3.9 in preparation for the new engine (1275, which is not yet fitted - s...

Re: steering column plastic bush

I installed the Mini bush. It's a big improvement and well worth the effort - the steering wheel feels much more solid and even takes a little less force to turn (not that the Minor needs lighter steering than it has...).

Re: Which disc brake kit?

What I did was take the Marina hubs, rotors, and caliper brackets from ESM, paired with locally-sourced MGB calipers, hoses, and pads (I'm in the States, so shipping on the complete Marina kit would have been outrageous - and Marinas were never/rarely sold here, so no local parts). It all fits toget...

Re: An American Moggie ~ My '59 Morris Minor 1000 2-door saloon

You're quite right, Phil - I am normally the first to be concerned about pollution of any kind, but I haven't got the funds to procure a complete air injection setup with pump, etc. So I coated plugs in exhaust sealant and screwed them into the cylinder ports. What a beautiful engine in your photo! ...

Re: An American Moggie ~ My '59 Morris Minor 1000 2-door saloon

I wouldn't be surprised if you're right about that hose, Phil. The guides are what they are and the head's at the machine shop now. Also, on closer inspection, I was wrong about the drift - it is flat on the step, not angled. And my experience of no sealant on the 948 leads me to disagree on the sea...

Re: An American Moggie ~ My '59 Morris Minor 1000 2-door saloon

And now for the final tale in our update. Here's where the "very bad" stuff kicks in! I hadn't had a functioning fuel gauge for maybe six months - the older style without a voltage stabilizer - so I bit the bullet and got a new sender/float for the tank, and used the later gauge wit...

Re: An American Moggie ~ My '59 Morris Minor 1000 2-door saloon

At the same time as the engine work, I finished up most of the gearbox work. I was dissatisfied with the gearbox's cleanliness, so I scrubbed and scrubbed before reassembly. 18192322_1499346300117522_6482902662190195797_o.jpg 18194126_1499346236784195_7183600315745786908_n.jpg The next task was to c...

Re: An American Moggie ~ My '59 Morris Minor 1000 2-door saloon

Many things have happened on the Mog project since April - some good, some very bad! Continuing the work on the new engine, I installed the oil filter head, pipe, and banjo fitting. 17835135_1471844972867655_2522954233158898687_o.jpg I next installed the dipstick and its guide tube... 17992278_14817...

Re: Minor for daily use

In four years of driving my Minor almost daily (with occasional extended down periods), I've only racked up about 18,000 miles. I don't know that Mog struggles to keep up with it, but it certainly takes more upkeep than a modern.

Re: Embarrasingly stupid question about alternator

Years ago my Minor had a problem with inoperable dynamo control boxes (the electromechanical box up on the firewall). After three nonfunctional ones, I ditched the whole system and changed to an alternator from an MGB I got for $30 off eBay. Its internal voltage regulator failed a few years later, b...

Re: Favourite countries in Europe

I've never had the pleasure to visit, but I've always had a great affection for the Scandinavian countries. Norway especially seems like a really interesting place with a pleasing language and intriguing culture. I'm also (obviously, due to my car) fond of Britain and Ireland. Really I'd like to jus...

Apologies if this has been addressed already, but last time I tried to post photos in my restoration thread, I was limited to three images per post. Is that a function of the new site software, or am I doing something wrong?

Re: Testing new valves & valve guides

Just a cheap electronic micrometer, Phil. Accurate enough down to the thousandth, but no further. I drool over the precision-machined analog dial ones. 8) But haven't got the funds!

Say, I have precision ground rods, don't I? Eight of them, in fact...and those valves all drop in without resistance.

Re: Testing new valves & valve guides

The head is going to be sent to a machine shop for seat recutting. I can have them do a proper reaming at the same time, I'm sure, though by my micrometer I'm pretty sure I have them to the correct 9/32" bore. My point was that, with such an important and potentially damaging thing, it'd be nic...

Testing new valves & valve guides

Hi all, You may be aware I've been (slooooowly) rebuilding a Midget 1275 to go in my Mog. I've finished everything but the head work. A few weekends ago I drove the old cast iron valve guides out and drove in fresh manganese-bronze ones, and I bought new valves too. The guides took a little reprofil...

Most interesting, John! In my fiddling about with my own wiring diagram I'd come to a pretty similar layout. 8) When I have time, I'll wire it up as you have it, and see what happens.

Re: Bee hive springs rear brakes

These little horrors are one of the very few things I agreed with Roy on. I find that it's not so much reinstallation of these springs that's a problem, but removal. And if you don't have them grasped tightly when they finally come loose, they go flying! Admittedly I do a fairly low yearly mil...

Re: Wiring for demister fans

What I've come to discover is that blower motor resistors like discrete steps in power, rather than continuous variety. After experimenting with various options - Arduino boards and MOSFET controllers - I'm tossing out the old rheostat. :( A blower switch from a 2001 Mazda Protégé looks like it will...

Re: Glove box x2

Lower the steering column and you will see those gauges so much better. The banjo steering wheel is 95% empty space. I've never had the merest hint of a visibility problem with the gauges in the glovebox lid. I do occasionally have to move my head an inch to the right to see the oil pressure warnin...
