Re: Breaking down after 4-6 miles ?

Brian Does it instantly " cut out " or " spluter " to a gentle halt ? If it is instant ,I'd spend a pound or two on a new condenser. If only to eliminate it. But before purchasing.. are you happy with the short wire ( white with black tracer ) from the coil to the distributer.Soun...

Re: Bite the bullet

Give the hollow bullet a quick rub down with some emery paper, to get a nice shiney metal surface.Ditto the "holder part" so that you get good contact when re-assembling.If the wire strands are not clean and there is sufficient length, strip a little off the end to get some fresh cable int...

Re: solenoid perhaps?

It sounds like it is the solenoid that is at fault. contacts sticking. With the battery disconnected.... check the major cables, battery earth, battery to solenoid, solenoid to starter motor and the actual bolts on the starter motor to the engine are good and tight.Check that the smaller wire , the fe...

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)

David The de-grease and clean up would have done wonders for it.It's rare for major work to be required on a wiper motor, so re-grease ( cotton buds are good, squeeze the grease onto the bud tip and twist, so that there is no loose fluffy bits of cotton, then apply ).Care around the self parking mech...

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)

David How far are you planing to dismantle the wiper motor ? If you are very gentle you can release the wire that goes through the body of the motor to the now loose domed cap ( obscured in the picture ).Out with the soldering iron and melt the solder, gently lifting the two metal tangs holding it t...

Wires and connectors ( and much , much more ) from either : - Auto Electrical Supplies Ltd. http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk or Vehicle Wiring Products Ltd. http://www.vehicleproducts.co.uk I've used them both. You'll need "Standard" cable ...not the modern "Thin wall cable. Depen...

Re: Removing Fuel tank sender unit?!

I'd order a new sender gasket to keep it all fuel tight on re-assembly.You can be lucky sometimes with the old gasket but they are not very expensive. Disconnect the battery at the start, stray sparks and an open fuel tank are not a good companion !! Be gentle removing the sender/ float arm ( and no...

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)

David
I'm no expert on pick ups but if ESM don't stock one ( and the other usual stockists don't either ? ) then I would measure the hole size in the bodywork.Next the diameter of the handbrake cables and buy suitable sized grommets from a decent Motor factors.

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)

As above .. and If you " present " the hub, as close as you can, to the shoes and check the individual shoes are in the optimum position. Inspecting from different angles you can see where the shoe/s might need a slight tap left or right ( in the grooves ) with a rubber mallet, to line up ...

Andrew 16 degrees ?? Come on, you're boasting now !! The corect setting will save you a few pounds on replacement tyres ( they would have been acting more as a snow plough ). A good call to get it checked. It reminds me of my eldest son's first car, a Beetle. We had to replace the front suspension ( ...

MOT'd ,as they say "result".
You now have permission to wear a silly grin for a couple weeks, you know the one that says ,I restored it myself. The satisfaction factor will stay with you for ever.

My pal's moggie has just come back from the paint shop recently as well. It's always a great time in a restoration and really fires you up again, to get everything fixed back on the car !
The paint job is "looking good ".Keep cracking on, Spring isn't far away.

Re: An American Moggie ~ My '59 Morris Minor 1000 2-door saloon

To help with the welding and to reduce the " blowing of holes" ....get hold of a small piece of brass bar.Putting it behind the metal to be welded, will act as a heat sink.
It goes withiut saying that cleaning the metal thoroughly ...before your start is a given.Good luck with it.

Congratulations on the progress so far.Restoration plans are always "subject to alteration ", especially the time aspect. Short cuts now always lead to regrets later. You will spot the faults when you finish and it will niggle. Do it, whilst it is in bits, it's a pain going back later. It w...

Make sure ,whatever you do, that you leave "ventilation" with any sort of heating. My fan heater toasted when I was trying to dry out carpets after a flood....I thought sealing up as many gaps as I could, would help things dry quicker.Wrong...nearly set fire to the place !! I was young, pen...
