removing timing chain cover

Hi all,

What's the easiest way to remove the timing chain cover without taking the engine out or head off?

Eg how do you stop the crank from moving when undoing the nut?

Bmcecosse - it's the quality of the gaiters I was more concerned with rather than their abililty to slide over the TRE.
I'm thinking that if they can slide over the TRE then they must be strong and flexible and therefore will last a while longer than the standard ones.

I've just ordered a set.
I have got a couple of gaiters from one of the Minor specialists which I was reluctant to fit because they didn't seem quite flexible enough.
I'll let you know how I get on.

rear damper topup

Hi,

I know the haynes manual says that you need to remove the rear damper to top it up but do you really need to?

Leaky brakes

Hello, I've got a leak in my braking system. Well I haven't, my car has. It seems to be leaking from the 3 way joint on the rear axle. Trouble is I can't tighten the nut up any more than it is. This probably isn't helped by the 3 way connector not actually being attached to anything. So my questions...

Breather on 1275 midget engine

Well, it turns out that I have a 1275 midget engine under the bonnet - thanks to all who identified it in an earlier post. The problem is there is no breather on the timing chain cover and I can't find a replacement anywhere. I'm thinking about drilling a hole out and attaching a cylinder to the exi...

Tom - :D
Mike - I thought the same thing as it looked considerably different than the one I replaced. But it was purchased as a throttle return spring and it certainly works well enough.
BMC - thanks for that - I'll tuck it away.

I've just checked and there are no blockages or kinks in the pipe. I've just acquired a tappet chest cover which I was told would be ok for the 1275. Do you think this would work? photo here: http://www.23hq.com/lordanthony/photo/4305860?album_id=4299977 Mike - is the attachment too large? Sometimes...

I'll check the pipe tomorrow for blockages.
There was no rubber on the underside of the oil cap. I've got this one on now: http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pop ... php?pID=19

There's no canister on there.
When I got the moggy there wasn't a breather connected to the rocker cover and the oil cap didn't have a seal but since I've sorted these out the oil leak seems to have got worse. I thought it was coincidence but could there be a connection?

To be honest I get a bit nervous when I go over 60 in it anyway!
I've just ordered a 1275 sump gasket and I'll see if that stops the leak.

It was the sump gasket that I changed.
Would fitting a larger carb bring any benefits other than speed?
Thanks for everyone's help.

Mike - thanks for that I'll take a look. Marky - It's been spot welded or something like that. There's no damage above the plate by the looks of things but I can't think where else the oil could be coming from,. There are also little collars attached in a similar way on either side of each of the se...

Sumps

Hello, I have a few sump-y questions that I'm hoping someone can help with. Excuse my ignorance on these things but I've never had a car on which you have to do these things before! It's a 1958 2 door 1000 saloon by the way. Ok - Question 1: Does anyone know if the 948 and 1098 have different sumps?...
