Re: Noisy engine

A damped pulley as fitted to minis can make quite a difference to the general engine smoothness. Having changed from a riveted version I would never go back

Re: Replacing wheel cylinders

Brake flaring tools of sufficient quality to use with cunifer pipes are quite expensive when compared with premade brake pipes. If you have a standard set up I think you would be better just to buy premade kits for the car or the ones you need. Your brake pipes sound to routed as bmc installed them ...

Re: Smoking

This is not correct. The breather should be connected to an intake on the carb on the bulkhead side. I suspect you have a different carb fitted. If would be worth changing the engine breather to an earlier type and vent to atmospheres. You could change the carb but it would be easier to do the engin...

Re: Smoking

Have you changed the breathing as suggested above. The can breathing system was only fitted directly to the carb inlet or pcv valve. You have a non standard set up.

What cap do you have on the rocker cover? Breathing of closed

Re: Replacing wheel cylinders

James I would replace the flexis at the same time if you can. It's suprising how flexible and spongy they can get. It's the time to replace them. You will not want to go back to them once you have installed the new cylinder. I have never used brake clamps but I know other do. I put a plastic bag und...

Re: Sudden splutter over 50mph

Your description would lead me to suspect its fuel. It could be either the pump capacity or partial blockage. I would see how quickly the r fuel pump pumps (ticks) or better still measure the delivery volume. It could be a blockage on the suction side. What condition is the large flexible pipe in be...

Re: Gearbox dust seal dropped into clutch area

Update I have jacked it up high so i can see it. Now i have better access i have: Turned the engine over slowly by the handle while looking in to the area - i have watched a complete 360 degrees of the clutch by doing this. Removed the starter motor thinking it must have dropped into this area but n...

Gearbox dust seal dropped into clutch area

I changed my steering rack yesterday and in the process disturbed the top gearbox dust seal. I cannot find it so I can only assume its fallen inward into the clutch area. I have peered in the bottom of the clutch area via the lower seal but I cannot see it. I have not dared to turn it over. I cannot...

Re: What would you do if….

Personally I would not replace the interior unless i really had too as a last resort. The original seats look somewhat different to the repro ones. For my car i have actually bought a spare set over the years tucked away in the loft, in case i ever need it. Its duotone, and repro ones i have seen ar...

Re: Overheating and venting oil

I would be suprised if the air breathing set up will work. The symptoms you describe align with too much pressure in the engine. Systems with canister breathes either go directly to the carb or pcv on very late models. In either case the system has significant pressure to keep a partial vacuum throu...

Screw not adjusting the throttle speed- this will probably mean the cable needs adjusting. THe cable legnth is too short as secured. It might be that the outer is not seated properly

I would change you flexis before going too much further. I was amazed at the difference these can make. New ones can give the brakes a lot more bite

As suggested above there is a high chance of a manifold leak. Often easier to spot on start up while looking under the bonnet

Re: Poor heater output after long time off road.

I have installed a 3 way valve on my van. This allows the water to continue around the loop when the heater is isolated. It's been in place now for a 3 years and has worked well.

Re: Gearbox Needed

Is it crunching going into 1st or 2nd? 1st gear has no synchro so this is normal. It should not crunch going into 2nd.

If you have never driven one before its best never to select 1st while moving. You will find when stationary 1st is easier to select if you pit it in 2nd before selecting 1st.

Re: Brake Pedal Spring

Has the chassi leg been changed?

My replacement leg come without the bracket for the return spring. I carelfull measured and replicated in thr new leg but if you did not do this it may have resulted in an incorrect spring mount and thus the new spring won't work
