If I can't make it (who knows!!) or even if I can, does anyone want to drive/co-drive my 71 pick-up to Orkney?
It doesn't need driving back and the driver/co-driver needs to blag a lift back home!

The pickup's not going to make it back off the island this time?

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Ah ok. I'm only hanging off because I haven't got the stomach to admit I'm dropping out of the Russia tripI really do hope you can make it Ray.
Please can you put me on the list (with the mongrel pick-up).

I'm planning to use youth hostels again, plus camping in Kevin's field on Orkney.

We were thinking of using YH's as well. Since we don't have a dog this year our options are a bit wider.
We are going to stay at St Just YH before setting out, worth booking that one early as it's quite small.
We may stay on a farm at Lea near Malmesbury, about 15 miles south of Cirencester. My Dad usually has his caravan there at that time of year. They take tents as well if you are interested Alex.
There is one near Bath (30 min from Cirencester), one near Consett (15 min from Beamish) and one in Fort William. Don't know about Ripon, bet there'll be one near Thurso.

i'm not sure if you want local moggies tagging along for short parts of the route but it would be nice if we could all see the route so that other, not so willing or able, could offer support. I myself am considering doing a short part of the run on a sponsored basis for the marie curie foundation. Even if i do only 20 or 30 miles of the route, it could be a good way of collecting money and if more people did a short hop for money it could be lucrative for the charity.
