Mr Grumpy?

Post by croft »

Hi all I have been reading a few old copies of Minor Monthly and noticed a lot of ad's for Mr Grumpys Minor parts. Some of these look very good, I cant find any trace of the company on the net so was wondering what happened to them? are they still trading or has anyone else taken over the production of the parts. I really liked the look of the Heat guard that protects the fuel line and carb bowl. Ive had experiance of vaporisation on my old Ford pop and wouldnt like it to happening on the Minor. Do Minors suffer from this or should I try and find a guard?

Mr Grumpy now runs a sort of craft/arts market in his old mill in Todmorden. He sold his Minor business and stock to ESM and some of his parts (eg. the quarterlight latches) are still available from them.

Some but by no means all Minors suffer from fuel vaporisation (mine never have). I suspect it depends on how blocked-up your fuel line and tank strainer are (if the pump has to suck harder to draw the fuel up it will be more likely to boil in the pipe). Don't bother trying to fix it unless you're sure your car suffers from the problem.

some suffer from it more than others - however the main factor is spending ages in a slow moving queue on a very hot day.

Digging up an old thread yet again , but this seems the best place for it...

Is Mr Grumpy contactable?
Is this one of his engines?
Can anyone decipher the engine number?

Well just looking back 12 years on this thread tells us he's not doing Minors any longer...

BHM Engines are Factory replacement series.
There's mention of BHM as a Prefix on this Mini List.
https://www.minimania.com/Engine___Iden ... ta_UPDATED

Just go to the page and search BHM.
The BHM 1448 isn't there, but then it's a Mini Site so not unexpected.

Just searching for 'BMC Engine BHM prefix' gives several sites where the BHM is mentioned as a Factory Replacement Engine.

I would say the engine in the photo is a Factory Replacement from some time when, that at a later date had some work done by Mr Grumpy. Simple as that.

I would agree with geoberni. "Mr Grumpy" certainly had no in house engine reconditioning facilities.

I used to go to Mr Grumpys premises to collect parts when he was at South Hinksey just outside Oxford and I cannot recall seeing any machining or reconditioning facilities.
He used to sell various items that had required machining i.e. modified Marina hubs so having machining done was within his sphere.
The engine in question has had the engine number removed and reaffixed slightly rearwards and secured by pop rivets. This suggests to me that the engine has been re-bored as the engine number has to be removed for the boring bar to sit on top of the block.
I suspect that the engine was reconditioned on behalf of Mr Grumpy and additionally stamped with Grumpys. In his adverts he does refer to supplying reconditioned engines.

Are the quarterlight catches still available. I have had a set on mine for 20 years or more since it was broken into via this route. I would like to get a second set for my van if they are available?
