Someone mentioned fast cars! well not neccesarily many youngsters, modify classics for looks not speed although I'm planning to do a fast Minor, I would be happy with a just funky looking Minor as I said beore cool accessories might improve the Minor image, also Minors on adverts, I see chrome dashpots, clear headlights and so on on other classic car suppliers which fit Morris Minors but no Morris Minor specialist stock these! or at least don't know of any!

Obviously we won't appeal to every teenager just setting out having passed their test.
I'm convinced though people will always like classic cars, as long as there is awareness.
The good thing is, I wasn't aware of how many young people we do have on this forum... which is a good start. How many therefore can't be bothered with forums and just enjoy the social aspects? There are some good ideas coming out on this thread and I hope it fills us with confidence that the youngsters do want to play their part. So everyone young and old keep the ideas flooding in!!
Youngsters may not be so interested in the moggy's history, but that will come, even if it means they move on.... then come back later in their lives after beer and women!

So do we do a "Mel Gibson Brave Heart style" troops rally.... and storm York with our starting handles?

It would seem that, if the National Committee are concerned then they must invite young(er) owners onto the Committee. If there are issues with that then they sit as non-voting members.
This and other forums would be a good recruiting ground
If this is deemed to be a forward thinking idea then I am quite prepared to send the suggestion to the general secretary and new assistant secretary with names of potential candidates IF they let me know who they are??

Hmmm so many thoughts, I don't know where to start....Sidney'61 wrote:Yes I think merging with a VW meet would be a brilliant idea.
I just don't whether the VW organisers would appreciate, should do, but I may look into that.
A Morris Minor run to the sun sounds great. I wonder if it would be possible to tag a contingent of us onto the actual RTTS or another VW cruise. We'd be a minority but so what?
The VW people I've come across have always been friendly and curious about our Minors. We do kind of blend in.

I think the Cal-Look can work quite well on a Minor - it can also be a cost effective modification. Chrome bits knackered? just remove them or rattle can them body colour. Lower torsion bars one spline at the front, slightly fatter wheels at the rear and job done...
I've never had a Beetle but do have a VZi VW forum account if I can remember the password, quite a crazy place.
As for young people getting into Minors - I just don't think there are going to be that many. We'll never have a scene like the VW one, we don't have the numbers or the support. Just look up how many air-cooled garages are out there compared to Minor ones.
Remember also that air-cooled VW scene is based around the engine. Beetles are the obvious majority but there's the campers, Beach Buggies, Fastbacks, Karmann Ghias etc. We don't bunch together with Minis and MG Midgets around the A series in the same way. Perhaps we should..

So, after 7 pages of discussion, has an answer been found?
The use of moggies in adverts is good, but already been done many times and gave off the wrong image. Great, just what we need.
A calendar was mentioned, this was also mentioned at beginning of the year using photos similar to my signature pics, but I see nothing for sale yet.
Have a joint bmc/bl sort of show. So is the morris and austin day at brooklands not cover this?
60 years of the club and hardley anything in the way of a celebration. 2009 is 50 years of the mini and they are all going absolutely nuts! shows and meets everywhere, sounds great.
So we've decided that the young get enthusiastic about modded minors, yes I agree there, you just have to look at back issues of minor monthly from day one, and any copy with a modded moggie on the front was sold out years ago.
So what do the other clubs do that are different? Exceptance, every body in the clubs excepts that the cars are modified and personalised to the owners taste, and not told the wheels are the wrong shade of white, when it's obvious the young owner has put a lot of work in to save a car modded or not.
A modded minor is the way to go then. But when faced with the price of buying a decent one, or building one, your looking at civic type-R money, and at a choice, I can understand why the honda would get the vote. In some ways I wish I had a nice 53 plate civic type-R sat in my garage instead of my traveller (i'm 26), I'm sure I may feel different if I ever get this car finished.
Just my view, sorry it's a bit long but thought I'd cover everything in one go.

The pulling power of a Turbo Diesel! The voices may not be real, but they have good ideas.

well i think you have hit the nail on the head
i was dissapointed at the clubs way of celebrating 60 years
i dont belong to the local mmoc club, instead i opted for the east sussex club which has a more freindly and open approach to minors and minor owners
and my thank to jason and sue for this and all the other members who made me most welcome
