100,000.0 and counting

Post by MrDodo »

Dodo turned the clock last week http://sdrv.ms/XiJQxM as I'm owner number 4 I don't know if this is the first time she's done this. Anyway, here's to the next 100,000 :)

Some years ago we did this with one of the cars, and reported it with photo in the local branch newsletter. A couple of months ago, we did it again on the same car! Still driven every day.

At my current annual average that would take me almost 20 years, though that's more than twice as fast as the first (?) 100,000

The 1968 A35 van I sold two years ago had gone round the clock 3 times and had done 369000 miles when I sold it.It still had the original engine, clutch and gearbox.

The A35 was owned by my brother in laws uncle who did 342000 miles in it and always did routine maintaince on it and I did 25000 miles in it .I had to sell as it was going rotten underneath so sold it to a friend who was going to restore it but he died 3 weeks ago of a heart attack so I think someone else might finish the restoration.

If I had the time and space I would but I have to look after the Morris van as I use the van 3 days a week for my job and a MG Midget takes up enough time.

My Uncle knew someone who had a 1920s Bentley and did 100000 a year and serviced it every month and after 10 years before moving to Australia for a while he decided to strip the engine for an overhaul and when an expert looked at it he thought it had only done about 10000 miles instead of a million miles on the same engine. The cars still going strong.

That is very impressive and I've set myself the target to get to 100,000 in my Series II and my other classic, the Allegro. I cover 10k a year in that car which is currently on 68,700 and using oil at 200 miles to the pint, motorway speed.

I take my hat off to you, sir, for reaching such a mileage on the original running-gear.

My 1935 Morris 8 is approaching 99000 this year and should make the 100,000 by December with a bit of luck. I gave the engine a rebore last year with new bottom ends 20 thous u/s and new main bearing shells std. should be good for another 40,000. :D :D

40,000 seems to be the average before needing major attention. Not much changed in British cars from the 1930s to 1970s :(

Dad's Dodge WC62 showing 80,000 genuine miles. However, that could do with some attention. Its had a hard life, being used in a quarry previously and maintenance was scarce. And it has (among other things) the primer arm for the fuel pump floating round in the sump
I know not technically British, but..

Those old Yanks often rolled up high mileages because of the distances they had to travel at high speed - kinder to an engine.
