Improved bonnet prop.
Hi all,
Just read about a prototype bonnet stay invented by a member of the Dorset MMOC and selling for £27.50.
Couldn't find any sign of it on their website.
Anyone else seen it? The pictures in Classic Car Weekly show the bonnet open and supported nearly vertical allowing easier access to the rear of the engine room. Good idea I reckon!

A good idea. The only thing you have to watch for is possibly increased strain put upon the weak fixing of the bonnet crossmember to the bonnet skin - just 2 or 3 spotwelds

Charlie, very tidy job. What size are the hydraulic stays and how long have you had them fitted?charlie_morris_minor wrote:would love to see some photos, i made my own bonnet prop using hydraulic ones from a scrap BMW it increases the space between the bonnet lip and front panel by 13 cm[frame][/frame]

Re: Improved bonnet prop.
i have had them fitted about 6 months.
one on its own is sufficient to hold the bonnet up so i doubled up to make sure as i do not want a bonnet to fall on my head, it also ensures that the load is spread evenly either side of the brackets.
I have written up all the details in the April issue of the custom and modified newsletter.. including which BMW you they came from etc etc..

Re: Improved bonnet prop.
There used to be a similar kit for the boot lid. I had one fitted but the strut was too strong and broke the hinge. I still have the strut so I might try it on the bonnet

Hey that's me in the Classic Car Weekly photo. If anyone wants a 2-stage bonnet prop then pm me or send a message through website. There is a little video on youtube which shows it in action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz7v7QEDBxM

Re: Improved bonnet prop.
I tried my old boot gas strut on the bonnet but it was too long and the bonnet would not close. I also had to enlarge the clevis pin holes slightly. How long are your struts when compressed?

Re: Improved bonnet prop.
This one is a copy of the original but with a telescopic top section which doubles the effective length. No gas struts involved. If the top part is not extended, it is no different to the original part.
Re: Improved bonnet prop.
Where can I buy one???
