Oil for axle

Post by 67-2door »

Hi.
Is it acceptable to use EP80/90 GL5 oil in the rear axle instead of the EP90 that's recommended in the manual?
I have plenty of 80/90 to hand but I'm struggling to get EP 90 locally, will the thinner oil make it more likely to leak?
Thanks.
Neil.

Neil,
I've used that EP 80/90 GL5 oil for years without trouble. I've a small drip at the front bearing (behind where the prop-shaft connects) but I've always had it and it's no worse with the new oil. So I say use it!

I prefer to use the manufacturer's recommended EP90 so I got some Millers EP90 from Classic Oils in Aylesbury

It's funny you say that. I was at Newark autojumble yesterday & a stall there was selling Castrol classic EP90 so I bought some of that to refill with instead of the EP80/90.
