Speedo malfunction

Took the car for a run this morning and everything was fine speedo working correctly. Stopped for about an hour and drove off I then noticed that the speedo was not working but after about 5 minutes it started to work again. Any thoughts ?

Cable broken and ends catching now and then?

Early cars has rubber buffer in the peg that the needle sits upon whilst parked. It rots and becomes sticky. Mine needs a hefty tap to free it off. Could that be it???
