Stopping the shakes

Post by LouiseM »

Just spotted this interesting article about a twin cam split screen traveller and how a vibration problem was solved. Fascinating to see the amount of work that has gone into it, including designing a damper for the rear view mirror to balance out the vibration from the exhaust :o https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2017/06/0 ... ompromise/

It is interesting and on reading it I realise I must fall in to the "if it aint broke dont fix it" brigade, also I switch off a little when I see the words "heavily modified"
Issigonis Leonard Lord et all would spin at high revs in their graves if they were to understand a cousin from across the pond fitted a Japanese engine in place of the original A series model.
Now I know I stand to open a can of worms with the modifiers, but in defence I myself robbed a Rover V8 of its engine to build a kit car once, but once a car is this "heavily modified" it looks like a Morris Minor, but really is no more a Morris Minor than the A.C. Cobra I built from refurbished scrap yard bits.
Now like a 2nd world war Lancaster bomber pilot over Berlin, I am waiting for the flak.

Original/authentic cars are rarer and will become even more so. Those that exist should not be modified irreversibly, if at all.....

There is a Pathe video on YouTube that demonstrates a British manufacturer, I think BMC, putting cars and components through extensive stress testing. This includes sticking cars on vibrating platforms to see where the resonances are so they can adjust the designs accordingly. So this kind of stuff isn't new and that old method sounds like more fun than building a mathematical model!

Fascinating.

Lovely lowlight NWL435 (Doesn't seem to have any bumper spacers although NWL576 was the first production model) with no doors, no seat belts and driver and technician at serious risk.... H&S ?? What H&S ??

Another early one (Bumper inserts) OJO 20.

NWL433 was a 'narrow' pre-prod tourer registered Sept 1947. Likely that NWL435 was pre-prod 'narrow' saloon. Chassis no. EX/133 fitted with 800cc flat-four.

Beginning to doubt myself. NWL435 looks like a normal 'wide' S.MM even the 1949 onwards tail lights but no bumper joint. Was it retained as a development prototype? Or just random dummy numberplates for Pathe's benefit?

Thats what i was thinking. Certainly seems 'widened' but the plate would seem to predate the first production or what has been acknowledged as the first production ???

Publicity pic in Paul Skilleters book shows black tourer and production light-coloured saloon. Saloon plate is partially obscured but reads NWL43? Page 49 if you have a copy of it.
