My exaspirated tones roused some on here into action...dozen more chassis & cab numbers have been added, AND the 2 remaining LCV change points - previously unknown since production records were destroyed - since narrowed down to 50!!

Stagnated on the Traveller's; have about 300 listed, details needed from vehicles with body numbers after 219500 please.

Well, up to 310 Adderley Park Traveller's - with both chassis & regn numbers recorded - on the database....not quite as bad as the 65k LCVs, but still hard work nonetheless...

Puzzle where the 188 figure comes from.

Hi POMMReg

I have just found another small plate on the top left hand side of the bulkhead on my 1969 Traveller.
I was hoping you could tell me what it means please, the number is Z36054

Thanks
Phil

Should be two numbers up there Z XXXXX and 1234567 earlier models also had a set of letter ie BMH and a single letter . Others had yet another set of numbers on a second strip. Z and first number (Body Number) have nothing to do with the legalities but refereed to batches of body shells produced and particular types ie 2 door saloon, 4 door saloon traveller lcv GPO Army etc. The numbers or some of them at leats are replicated on the NMP plate on the NS front of the engine bay tie plate under the bumper stanchion.

Searching for NMP plate ion here will take you to threads but below is reproduced for your info. Due to some time wasters, we have a very few of the repro NMP plates left if you want one.

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=68734

They take some deciphering . Pommreg greatly assisted me in this.

I used tinfoil and tracing paper to get them up. They are nowhere else on the car and Gaydon do not have records of the Z. No. number Mine read.

‘Z . 20252 R BMH 115361’ R initially mistaken for an H - easy to under the paint.

The only ones you need are in bold, The R indicates 4 door (?) Early models, though not consistently, had a letter before the second set of numbers ie T123456 (T= Tourer) on the NMP plate as well.

BM = MM & S2 2dr
BMA = S2 non GPO van
BMB = S2/early S3 GPO engineers
BMC = ditto mailvan
BMD = S2 Traveller
BME = S3 2dr
BMF = S2 4dr
BMG = poss S2/S3 export GPO spec van
BMH = S3 4dr
(BMK = 1959 Mini)
BMT = MM/S2/S3 Tourer.(5 digits max)
CMC = S2 LCV Chassis cab
TMB = S2 LCV pickup

NMP plate prefixes; where they exist.

C = Civilian (non GPO) LCV
P = GPO van (ended at 216950)
R = All 4dr
T = Tourer

Looks like post 1954 series 2 revamp these appeared on the strip but not on the plate and then vanished altogether with final revamp of S3 after 1963.

Chris what did BMJ signify. One other thing, on stamping several S2 2 door (BM) NMP plates, I have come across a variant sign Z. XXXX.X ie second dot centrally placed before last digit. Any ideas ?

Not figured out the "•" thing either - although used on Longbridge LCV vin plates prior to "-" & colour coded B'ham's - mostly "/" for 2, or "-" more.

The LCV BMA,TMB & CMC codes used until c22329, cheesgrater grills.

BMJ is LCVs assembled at Adderely Park 1959-62.

I would love to meet the 'committee' who decided on this code ! Is it not to Issigonis that the quote ' A Camel is a Horse designed by a committee' is attributed ?

Thanks Chris !

I suppose it was NMP who allocated codes, similar on the J/JB.

The GOOD news is we now have a half decent understanding of these numbers, whole lot better than we DID, if nothing else, makes "cloning" Minor's far more difficult.
