Happy New Year everyone!

I thought I'd post a few photos I've taken of the engine bay and the carburettor, as folk seem interested in the unusual setup. With the aid of my highly technical manual (also pictured) I'm starting to learn what everything is!

The bad news is that my problems are definitely down to a leaking transmission; a pleasant New Year's Eve drive to Box Hill turned into a dash to Halfords to get more fluid before they closed, to ensure we all got home again before 2019.

I called a local specialist garage who aren't sure whether they want to get involved as it's not the original gearbox; they're going to have a think and get back to me.

I'll carry on posting in the relevant sections if (when) Peggy is back on the road and I can start sorting out the other little niggles.

I am intrigued by the accumulation of pipework to and from the carb and manifold.

Where does the pipe with the stop valve come from and what does it serve?

Interesting wiper motor mount !!!

@philthehill Ah! That's the wiper motor! Bit by bit the mysteries are laid bare.

I'm a bit perplexed by the additional pipes around the carb and manifold too; I think one of them may lead down the side of the engine and join up with the side cover plate breather- which then has a tap in line with the pipe before it opens under the car. I'm going to have another rummage in the daylight on Saturday and try to get my head around what's going on in there.

Well I had a proper look at the two additional black rubber hoses leading from the carb. One leads down to a large black metal cylinder with a white plastic top, which has several small (1/4") diameter copper pipes leading from it; I'm guessing that this is something to do with the brakes based upon where the small pipes are leading to; two to the back of the car and one to each front wing.

The other black hose does indeed join with the metal breather pipe coming out of the side of the engine- they join at a t junction then lead to a one inch copper pipe, opening underneath the engine bay, with a tap just before the end.

However when I looked this afternoon, this copper pipe had come away from the t junction and was hanging loose; I persuaded it back into place with a small hammer, but I'm going to need to solder the joint back together. There was a lot of dirty engine oil around the joint, which explains why my oil level has dropped since last weekend.

Anyone got any idea what's going on in there? It's all non-standard so Haynes and the maintenance manual aren't giving me any clues!
(I did try to take a photo but my battery died, so will take one tomorrow).

What you have described and what can be seen in the pictures already shown it appears to be a right miss mash - I would suggest that you put it all back to standard other than the vacuum pipe for the servo which should have the correct manifold take off connection not the home made adapter as shown.

A photo(or photos) of the lower N/S of the engine encompassing all of the pipes described above would be of benefit.

Cheers Phil,

I'll attempt a clearer photo tomorrow and compare with the standard setup - I'm working out the wiring diagram at the moment. I do like a challenge so it's all good fun.
