I picked up the tools below from Gumtree with another box of assorted spanners and car tools for £30, The last time we went to the local car boot my mate came back with loads of old britool as he has started collecting them as a hobby.

The Britool 42 series ring spanners as seen in the box above have a lovely feel when handled and are really up to hard and long term use.

The Britool 6J series open ended spanners are my preference, again lovely to handle.

It is still possible to obtain original NOS Britool spanners from the likes of 'e' bay but it does require patience to get what you want.

The hexagon drive socket set shown above is good but not so adaptable as the later 1/2" square drive though adapters are available to convert the hexagon to 1/2" square drive so that the likes of the 1/2" drive stud extractors, torque wrench etc can be used.

Britool 12 point sockets from the EBM series are to me the bees knees complimented by Britool sockets procured for specific tasks.

Whilst I do try to obtain original Britool spanners and sockets it is not always possible to find what I want so have to buy what I can obtain but always of a good quality chrome vanadium.

I still have some of the Britool spanners I purchased during my apprenticeship in the Morris/BMC Garage over 50 years ago and they are still in good condition.

I will stick with the Britool but I do have some Stahlwillie Whitworth and A/F open ended spanners. The reason for retaining the Stahlwillie spanners is that they are quite thin and will fit into spaces that the Britool spanners will not.

Both are quality tools. I did buy a complete 200 piece tool set last year from Halfords, their advance range. Not sure how they will compare but I’m pleased with them.

Whilst the conversation is about tools, their quality and longevity - I have recently purchased this vintage valve re-facing lathe.

I suspect it was made a long time ago but still does the job.

Whilst not as good as a Black and Decker powered tool with the two revolving stones it certainly cleans and trues the valve seating face sufficiently to reduce the lapping in process.

The drive handle is normally fitted onto the tail part of the valve stem but that could damage the valve stem so adapted a new chuck to suit.

The cutting blade is adjustable for both size and angle so a wide range of valves can be re-faced.

For scale - the valve being re-faced is a 1275cc Morris Marina/Ital inlet valve.

I have a Kamasa 1/2" drive socket set from the 1970s. Only one socket ever failed and that was because the socket handle had a 4 foot pipe on it (stupid tyre fitter had used a windy gun). It was the best tenner I ever spent. Old Kamasa are very underrated, newer ones are rubbish.
