Exhaust Age

Post by Donald Ross »

:D Hello
I have attached a photo of the exhaust I removed from my car recently. I have reason to believe it may be the original one the car came out the factory with in 1970 but I am not sure.

I have now scrapped it but I am wondering if it could be the original one.
If anyone knows if it is in fact original or has a idea of the age please let me know.

The brackets it was held on with were so rusty I had to cut them off.

My car is a 1970 Morris Minor which has been off the road since the early 80s and has been kept in a dry environment all its life. It also still has the original paintwork. I suspect it has done less than 50000 miles. This is what makes me wonder if the exhaust I just replaced could have been original to the car.

PLEASE NOTE:
I had to cut the exhaust to remove it from the car so it was a 1 piece system when it was originally fitted and on the car.

Thanks
D.R

What has happened to the part of the exhaust that went over the axle?

From the photos posted I would suggest that the exhaust system is not original and has been replaced at some time.

The original exhaust system was a one piece system from manifold to tail pipe end. See link below.

Hello.
Thanks for your reply.

The part that went over the axle was left out of the photo.

Although it was a 1 piece system.

Could it be original as it is a 1 piece system?

Thank you for the additional details.
The reason I am certain the exhaust is a later replacement is that the original exhaust silencer had flat ends and the exhaust silencer in your photo has tapered ends. It may even have crimped ends but I cannot clearly make out if it has or not.

See wksp man section I, illustration 1.2. for details of original style silencer.

MY 2002 Focus is still on its original exhaust! If it ever fails MoT badly it'll make a great donor car as it has the 2.0 Zetec with low miles and FSH

The old exhaust straps were made out of a stout, canvas-like material. I think you can still get them but I doubt they are quite the same as the original type. I recently removed one which had finally given up the ghost, perhaps after more than 60 years service.....

My exhaust has a mainly flat welded edge not pressed. The seem running the length of the exhaust silencer was also not pressed it seemed to be sort of welded to. My exhaust was not pressed in any area at all.

Mine was held up with canvas like hangers with a rubber outer layer onto the metal bracket.

Myoldjalopy did your canvas like hangers have a rubber outer coating?

I know this exhaust may not be original but it seems to be a fair age.

Hi Donald,
No, it was just a canvas strap with a metal plate at the end where it was bolted to the floor and large washers at the other end. No rubber coating.

The exhaust hanging straps were available (& still are) with a rubberised coating and/or plain canvas dependent on supplier to BMC.
