Ford Based Front Disk Brakes

Post by Donald Ross »

Hello.

My car currently has fitted Morris Marina disk brakes on the front.
I also have a brake servo fitted and top up reservoir.

The marina disks are starting to get quite old now and are due for a replacement.
I have done some research and found the Ford based disk brake kit.

From what I can see it is easier to change brake pads on the ford callipers and it is easier to bleed them.
The ford kit looks more up to date and easier to maintain.

Does anyone have the ford based kit fitted to there car and how have they found it.

The question is are the Ford disk brakes better than the marina ones.
Here is a link to the Ford ones I was looking at.

Also if anyone knows what Ford car these brakes are off please let me know.

Thanks

There is nothing wrong with the Marina/Ital disk brake system.
I have had the Marina/Ital disc brake kit fitted to my Minor for some considerable time and they are more than adequate in stopping my performance Minor even without servo.
All parts are available at reasonable cost.
Friction pads are easy to replace - draw the two securing pins, pull out the pads and replace with new.
The brake discs are also easy to replace but does necessitate removal of the hub.
If you need new parts I can recommend Big Red. They have supplied me with various Marina/Ital brake parts and I have been pleased with their service.

The Marina/Ital parts you require will be considerably less than the cost of the Ford kit as listed in your link.

One of my disks have a slight warp in it.
I tried to remove the bad disk by removing the 4 bolts but with the extreme temperature it seems to have fused it to the hub.
I have had the whole hub off as I was changing the wheel bearing and that is when I noticed the disk but I could not separate the disk from the hub.
The warp is so slight you cant feel it when driving but I can feel it if the car is jacked up.

Do you think it would be ok to leave it the way it is as the disks themselves are in fair condition and will last a few more years and the rubbing between the disk and calliper cant he felt when driving only when the car is jacked up.

My pads are fine but do you know if I were to fit new pads how do I reset the calliper pistons?

Thanks

The disc retaining bolts should come undone quite easily - soak with plus gas and try again.

Put the hub upside down in a vice with the wheel studs pointing downwards with 2 wheel studs against the inside of each vice jaw.

Once you have removed the pads just push the pistons back into the caliper with a flat bar taking care not to puncture the piston seal/bellows.

Once you have fitted the new pads press down on the brake pedal and the caliper pistons will automatically set themselves.

You should have play in the bearings as they are tapered roller bearings not ball roller - 3mm - 4mm at the wheel circumference.

I fitted Owen Burton, Ford based disks to my Traveller some time in the late eighties, can't remember exactly when. The car has been used for commuting and touring ever since. I have had no problems at all. I use silicon brake fluid and the pads have never been changed.

Was gonna say, Owen Burton stuff was Marina/ital based and the origin of the stub axle sleeves to fit marina bearings to minor stubs.

Way back there were several companies producing Marina based disc brake conversions. My Ser 2 had a CS Auto Classics Marina disc brake conversion fitted which had the Marina stub axle fitted to the Minor swivel which did away with the top hat spacer.
We must not forget Mr Grumpy who was originally the main supplier of Marina disc brake conversions and components.
My current Minor has a mixture of CS Auto classics and Mr Grumpy components.
Both ESM and Bull Motif sell variations of the Mr Grumpy's Marina disc brake conversion.
Whilst Marina/Ital disc brake spare are readily available I will continue to recommend their use.

It was a long time ago but They are Ford based.
'OWN112FD Complete disc kit, using the more powerful Ford Sierra or Escort Mk 3&4 callipers. A larger swept area of pad gives greater stopping power'.

Phil your disks look to be in great almost new condition.

Mine are looking tired and worn out. I will be overhauling them sometime.
I will leave them as is for now.

I am not to worried about cost I would rather just do what is best for the car and best for long term.

Rather than just change the disk I think I would like to overhaul the whole lot as everything is old and worn out.
I like the marina disks and the ford ones so I will need to think about it.

Were did you get that paint it looks great and would really lift the look of mine.

Thanks

We learn something new each day. I didn't know that Owen moved into the use of Ford parts. I remember him as a "Marina Man"!
