Split-screen chrome surround on eBay??

Post by jagnut66 »

Hi,
Do you think this is really for a split-screen? It looks more like a rather battered 1000 one to me.......
Link below.
Best wishes,
Mike.

No, I think it is a splitty - it looks too narrow for a 1000 and the joining piece has the V-shape which fits the angle where the two screens meet.

Definitely for a split screen. Would be a heck of a job to straighten though

I expect the bidders are hoping to be successful just to get the joiner piece.

I'm after the drivers side split screen chrome but the condition doesn't look amazing for the money.

Morris Oxford MO/Morris Six trim is similar but larger. You'd only be able to tell them apart if you put the two side by side - or tried to fit the wrong one.

Looks like it had been drilled too. I am not sure but I don’t think they ever had holes in. Not even at the end.

We have produced a prototype joiner and firmer which are looking promising but the steel is still too thick.

We have been promised a pair of joiners and a pillar to use as templates. I am researching chromers at present to get a reasonable finish . I will keep people posted but it would be useful to gain a sense of level interest for having these.

I disagree. I think the chromed brass surrounds for the split-screen cars DO have holes in the ends. Once fitted, these do not show because the holes are beneath the joiner.
It is the stainless steel surrounds from the Minor 1000 which do not

Yes the ends of the trim have a hole. Even though there is only one joiner in the offer they are both very similar so a copy would be possible. Brass is quite malleable so there is a chance it could be straightened out. Mine won't sit down in the groove in the corners, probably having been prized out at that point in the past, and would need to be re-flattened before refitting. I hope somebody gets a bargain.

PS cant see any other holes in the trims (3 pieces and all) but a couple of kinks that look creased. A tin basher could iron them out.

Well I'd definitely be interested in buying a new set of split screen chrome pieces if anyone succeeds in getting them re-manufactured.

Hi,
I'm lucky in that Sally still has her chrome trim, however Olwyn didn't and whilst I owned her I was always on the lookout, as was everyone else I spoke to who didn't have them. So I think you could be reasonably certain of a good market for remanufactured chrome surrounds and joiners for split screen Minors. I'm sure restoration companies would be interested in them too.
Don't forget to advertise them on this site if you go ahead, as well as the usual other places like eBay.
Best wishes,
Mike.

An update on the remanufactured screen clips.

We have made initial moulds and tried pressings with tin plate. They have come out fairly well but the steel distorts on the crease.

The originals seem to be made of brass and. We have ordered some brass plate to try pressing.

The images show an original and sone of the part trimmed and Un-trimmed trial pressings.

An impressive effort so far, it will interesting to see how you get on with brass.
Obviously if you are successful they would need to be chromed, I have always thought stainless steel would be a good and long lasting medium to re-manufacture these (and the surrounds) in but I suppose the cost would be prohibitive.
I am surprised that the club hasn't taken mouldings of both the surrounds and the joining pieces from someone with a good set (removed whilst the car has a respray for example) and sourced someone who can re-manufacture them, in batches obviously for cost effectiveness and so also to keep the retail price at a reasonable level.
With so many split-screens out there that have lost them over time there would be customers surely?
Best wishes,
Mike.

Hear hear.

I too think that the MMOC would have enough funds to get someone to tool up and manufacture rare items. It was ordinary members that got side-valve engine sump plugs and Series MM gear-knobs manufactured, but where are the items now?
I sounded out ESM about getting the cill kick plates pressed out in aluminium alloy but, the guys that actually operate the presses that ESM and partners have bought, will only consider a minimum run of a 100 pairs as they will only operate the presses off a roll of metal - I'm sure I saw film, somewhere, of stampings being made, at Cowley, by single sheet feeding (not too many safety gates either!).
Nothing came of this.
Its also like the companies/people that made the early pattern alloy front wheel brake cylinders and Series MM/II rear lamp bases - where have they gone and what happened to the tooling?
