Body No. ?
Removed the bonnet prior to refitting the gearbox and engine and came across this tag and number on the left hand side of the bulkhead I’ve never noticed it before. Anyone have any ideas what it is? I’m suspecting the body number but It’s different format and number from the NMP plate on the bulkhead crossmember.
It’s BMF 3538 or BMF 3539
Car is a 1951 LHD Export MM short bonnet.

Re: Body No. ?
The number shown is the body number not the car number.
The number should be replicated on the Nuffield Metal Products plate which can be found at the front of the N/S engine bay tie plate.

Exactly what I thought, interestingly it’s not, but it’s VERY close. 3699 vs 3539philthehill wrote: ↑Sun Mar 07, 2021 4:37 pm The number should be replicated on the Nuffield Metal Products plate
Maybe my car was a Friday afternoon job way back in 1951.

Re: Body No. ?
I checked the list that that POMMreg sent me. BMF was assigned to Series II 4drs up to car number 448714. He does not have Z12238/9 on his list. The 1951 codes were Z121** and the 1952 codes were Z122**. He has Z12258/9 and possibly Z1258/9 for a 1952 four door.
I understand that all four doors all had the 803 engine so Series II makes sense, but it seems to be a 52 not 51. I also understand that these plates were attached at the Nuffield Metal Products plant before they were sent to the vehicle assembly location. If sent as CKD, the body would still have been assembled and welded. Were they sending just stampings in these days?
I think POMMreg would be interested in your details.

If anyone would know or have records for the numbers then it will be Chris (POMMREG). He is the font of all knowledge where things like this are concerned.

Re: Body No. ?
Early MM 4dr.
Subtract 500 off both numbers roughly gives the amount assembled to that point.
Makes sense it is an export due to the EoD slogan.
No "expert", I simply collect numbers.
