Insurance

Post by les »

I know we all have different circumstances where insurance is concerned but I’ve had a renewal quote from my regular insurer for just over £200, fully comp, agreed value, I think this is a bit steep. I’ve got no underlying issues re claims or convictions. Anyone else paying this sort of money?

Yes it’s difficult, I suppose there are various deciding factors, the area one live in not being the least but jimmy Is doing well at that price. I’ll still call them next week to hear their comments. I’ve been with them for years, I’m reminded that there’s no such thing as loyalty with insurance, or much else come to think of it. There’s even an additional charge for renewing, I should charge them for my custom.

Mine runs out Tuesday, I'm with RH Specialist. £250 for the Morris, agreed at 9K and my 1990 Cavalier CD.
Was going to phone around but did that last year and this year it went up £13 so will go with it.

I'm with Peter James. Agreed value, unlimited mileage, driving other cars, UK and European breakdown cover. £97.

I have used the breakdown cover once. They sent the AA who arrived within ten minutes.

Thanks,
James

£200 seems a bit steep. I’m agreed value of £9k and annual mileage of 5,000. £125.

The sub £100 price above is very good for unlimited mileage.

I wasn't either, but I think that's where customers have to understand the questions and answer carefully. My Traveller is always garaged, and when the insurance question came up I answered Yes to 'G#Is the car garaged at night?'. Only later - fortunately not in relation to an insurance incident - did I find out that meant always garaged at night. Well if I come back from a show (remember those?) and the car is wet, I'll leave it on the drive and not put it away until the following morning when it's dry. And then, during the night, I wasn't insured :o .

I rang my insurer and requested a change to Driveway overnight, so it can be in the garge or on the drive overnight, and there was no change in premium! Just for clarity while posting though - my highish premium above is I think because of a >£20k agreed value.

A very good point. I raised this issue with my insurer when getting the quote too and also found that selecting driveway made no difference to the premium, but meant it is covered sitting on the driveway as well as parked in garage. If selecting garage it wouldn’t be covered if parked on the driveway.

One other point to note if you do select driveway, I found if it’s parked on the public road at my house it’s not insured from 10pm until something like 6am. It MUST be on the drive at a minimum overnight or it’s not covered. It would however be covered on the public road away from my house. Sounds obvious really, but I suppose not everyone checks their policy thoroughly.

I don’t imagine many people would leave their Morris on the road at their home if they have a driveway, but it pays check the small print.

After calling my insurers, I’ve been offered about ten percent reduction, which I have accepted. Apart from the hassle of jumping through hoops with another company, I think I’ve got some worthwhile additions, including Rac cover, salvage and agreed value etc. Thanks for all replies on this topic.

It sounds like you have a result Les as it is always a pain changing insurance companies, although I use go compare and my details are saved on the go compare platform for all of my cars which makes it easier when renewing.

Crikey - sleeping every night in the garage seems a little much just to insure your car is insured! Where did you store the car while you were in the garage?!!

Yes, I thought that was a bit extreme just to save £100 or so per year
Takes all sorts though :)
I prefer to spend comfortable nights in a purpose built bedroom and my Minor is kept outside.

Actually, I think remaining in the bedroom at night is a condition in the small print of my life insurance :P

I seem to remember when I was with a previous insurer (Footman possibly) that the car needed to be garaged and locked when inside overnight.
