Insuring a grand-daughter for a few days

Post by MikeNash »

What ho, chums!

I've my 18 year old grand-daughter is coming next week and she hoped to get a drive on the old Traveller. She's on a provisional (currently all tests are way behind) and has passed her theoretical and I had hoped to insure her via "A-Plan" the local brokers who cover my Trav. Not a chance! No one under 25 years old - even at the NFU who cover the wife's car.
I had thought at, say, £10 a day for a 4/5 days and a limit on mileage, say, 500 miles it would be goer, after all I'm offering a rate of £3650 per annum, but no. Can anyone offer ideas or assistance? It can't be such a rare request of insurance companies.

Thanks in advance, MikeN.

Hi Mike,
When I was in my 20's I used to take my 18 year old cousin out for extra driving lessons in a Cavalier I owned at the time, just stuck the 'L' plates up, climbed into the passenger seat and never gave a thought to the insurance......
Ah, those were the days, twenty something and care free..... Oh, well.
My cousin passed her test by the way.
Best wishes,
Mike.

Last year I put my grandson on my Toyota Yaris for 4 days and it cost me £35 with Veygo Car Sharing Insurance policy. It would be worth doing a Google search.

An insurance man once explained to me that cheap classic car policies were only possible by avoiding any undue risks and providing only ‘safe’ cover, hence limited mileage and no cover for business use, young drivers etc. The difficulty with short term cover is that £10 a day seems a lot on a pro rata basis but a few days cover at this rate might not cover the admin cost of setting up a policy.

There a re loads of places that do insurance by the day some even specialise in learners, search the web for learner day insurance.

Thanks Kevin - found them! Your advice is better than I got from brokers I approached.

Footman James insures learners if they're club members - or at least they used to. That said it's possible you have to have your main policy with them yourself for that.

I don't know for sure but I'd suspect that if you use one of those Learner insurance companies then if she has an accident as the driver, since it would be her insurance and not your insurance that you'd only get scrap value for your car with no ability to retain salvage which might be something to think about.

That might be what they try and tell you but in reality they have a duty to replace at market value, one of the price guides and adverts for similar vehicles usually do it. It also helps to have a wife who is an ex underwritter, It usually goes something like

-Call centre opperative tells her loads of rubbish.
-She politely tells them they are talking rubbish and quotes the real facts to them with a load of legal speak about insurance companies legal responsibilities.
- Call centre opperative poops themselves and calls supervisor.
- Wife gets a fair settlememt virtually instantly.
