Indicater Flasher too fast

Post by Researchingreg »

On my 1968 Traveller, the flasher indicater works but flashes very fast. Is there any way the flashe can be slowed down to the normal flashing rate?

does it happen on both sides or just one side, as that can sometime mean a bulb has gone, check the bulbs

Has it always been like it or is it a recent change in rate?
Is it the same speed both sides?
Have you recently changed it, or anything else in the system?

These may seem like silly questions, but you wouldn't believe the number of times a simple question like this is asked and the Poster doesn't include relative info like they've just fitted a new flasher, or just changed all the lamps.

The traditional Flasher is preset to work with a particular wattage of lamps in the circuit. It's just a Bi-metal strip heating up due to the 2x21W lamps warming up the metal strip that opens the contact before cooling down and the sequence repeats.

A modern electronic one can have an adjuster on it, you'd need to look at it.

Thanks for the replies.

I only bought the Traveller on 2 September this year and it has always flashed fast on both sides and the bulbs in the flashers seem to be correct.

If it's got a traditional Flasher it will probably be marked on the can as something like one of these:
12V 21Wx2
12V 21Wx2 +5W Max 47W
!2V 42W

How fast is it going, the legal flash rate is between 60 - 120 per minute so that's quite an acceptable range you've got.

What indicator system have you got, and is it original or a modified version.
Post 63 then it's 'standard' older than that then...
Mine's a 55, with 61-63 indicators fitted in addition to the trafficators....

If it is flashing fast on both sides, the fault will lie with the flasher unit. This is a common weakness but simple to change.
