double ended wheel nuts.

Postby stuffedpike20 » Sat Apr 04, 2020 1:02 pm

Hi everyone.
I need a set of double ended wheel nuts as fitted to vans.
I have got three, so actually only need the other 13.
Thanks, John.

I think they were just fitted to Post Office vans rather than regular vans. Mine never had them. I expect they are a bit scarce now but good luck

They were double ended so that the nuts could not be put on the wrong way round if the poor old Postman had to change a wheel.

Post Office vans also had the jacking aid on the lower suspension arms so as to eliminate the jack slipping.

The same question could be asked as to why early Post Office vans had rubber front wings and that was because the front wings kept getting bashed. Rubber gives way and returns to its original form - metal wings do not.

Early post office vans were such so as to try and eliminate all possible misdemeanours by the driver :D :D

Of course, we forget now just how relatively common punctures were back then. I can remember having two in one day once! They are a pretty rare occurrence now and many modern cars don't even carry a spare wheel but when most vehicles had inner tubes and many roads were poor, punctures were certainly more frequent. Living in a rural area I recall the Morris vans used by the Post Office had "town and country" tyres fitted to the rear. I don't know how widespread that was though.

“many roads were poor” ——— no change there then!

I think our roads were vastly improved for a while, but I agree Les; many of them have become very poor again and anybody with a modern sporty car with hard suspension and low profile tyres might regret their choice :-?

Has anybody got any double ended wheel nuts that they are willing to sell?
Thanks, John.

Are you still looking for double ended wheel nuts? I have found 3, you are welcome to them.

Amazing what is coming to light during this adventure, I was only looking for my Midget workshop manual.
