how to install hazard lighting?

Post by wibble_puppy »

hi guys,

while my van is in bits i thought it would be sensible to install whatever wiring etc i need to make the indicators into hazard lights if necessary 8)

can anyone tell me how to go about doing this?

i think aupickup had a solution but i couldn't follow his explanation, could just be a bad brainfog day on my part

i can see that ESM have a unit which they call a "Flasher Unit - Hazard Warning", part no SWT106A (http://shop.morrisminorspares.co.uk/pro ... f093e466c8) Is this what i need? and if so how should i wire it in?

grateful for any advice :D

ESM list a kit rather than just a flasher unit.

£37.50 + vat etc. but will probably come with fitting instructions and maybe the wires are colour coded to suit the Minor?
Loks like the pull switch is made to fit under dash.

yes that is the one you need.
although its a shame they use square connectors instead of the bullit connectors
holden classic do the same one but with bullit connectors so makes it a bit easier.
those kits can be wired so you have hazards when ignition is off.
i will look at mine as it was a while since i done it and post it up here

I agree, it does seem to be too expensive for an illuminated switch, small relay, a few cables + connectors and a bit of plastic!
Must admit I didn't notice the Lucar type connectors  which will mean not a straightforward install.
I misquoted price too should read £37.95.

mmmmmm is it just me or is the holden classic website really hard to use? i did a search for "hazard" and the results aren't linked to the items, so for the ones without a photo or a description it's impossible to know what they are!

BTW for anyone else interested in this malarkey I just spoke to John at ESM and have checked out the connection thingy: the two spade connectors shown in the photo of the kit are the ones which push on to the flat connections sticking out of the back of the relay. So you can use any connectors you like to wire it in to your loom and battery. :D

If you look at a hazard switch from one of these kits you will see its quite complex. It doesn't have just two terminals like most. It has to:

Disconnect the flasher outputs from each side of the flasher switch and connect them together.
Connect the hazard flasher to these two wires.
Connect the built in lamp to this lot so it will flash.

It's normal to connect the hazard flasher permanent live so they will work ignition off.

presumably these kits come with destructions though, they don't assume you know where each wire should go?? :o
