HT Leads

Post by pskipper »

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what HT leads to get for a standard 1098cc. I bought a service kit only to find it didn't include them and would rather go to the local motor parts store then pay the p&p again!

Thanks

Some stores sell a pack of 5 leads to suit just about any A-series engine - same leads for Minor, Mini, A35, etc, etc, etc., just ask the assistant or check the package label. Alternatively, you can buy individual leads by length - measure the old ones and buy the same length new ones.

Check that the terminals on the new leads are the same style as your old ones. Almost any type of lead (copper, carbon, surpressed etc) will work but plain old copper core is the original and just sits there and works !

If you're into interior decor then the leads come in red, black, orange, blue, grey ........

Sorry Phil but as the service kits are only around a tenner + vat you cant expect HT leads to be included at the price and HT leads are not a change with every service item, also the kits from the minor specialist are generally far cheaper than local motor factors, how much would they charge for 4 plugs, dist cap, rotor arm, points, oil filter and air filter. If you ever go to any of the shows and Rallies you can get the service kits without the VAT so for a Tenner all in its unbeatable.

Not complaining about the price of the kit, just didn't know whether the leads would be included  (Agree totally that the cost is brilliant as my Rover costs over £50 on parts alone, can't get at half the stuff myself so I have to pay garage labour as well :( ). For some reason my old polo used to eat HT leads and Minerva definitely needs a new set as I got a shock through the rubber while trying to start her for the first time :ouch:
Anyway now all I need to do is get the leads and find somewhere local that hires out MIG welders, the warminster tool hire told me they don't do it anymore because too many people did botch jobs and then had a go at them when their cars fell apart!!!

Thanks

As you mentioned Warminster I assume you are near by, so I am sending you a private message with what may be a useful contact.
Cheers

If you do go to a local retailer, the Mini HT leads are usually fine but it depends on where you coil is situated. Therefore check the length of the coil lead against your existing one before you hand over any cash.

You can get a nice shock off the exposed copper caps on the leads that Brixton likes if you touch them with the engine running... wakes you up!!
