temperature guage wiring

Post by cococola »

I have a choice of 2 gauges to fit in my morris minor 1000.
1.digital round guage with red. black and green wires
Can somebody please advise me where the wires connect to?
2.older round guage with a thick copper wire off the back.
does this wire go straight to the sensor in order to work?
Where Is the best place for me to fit the sensor please?

I haven't decided which guage to use yet..depending on fitting and looks
many thanks in advance :D

Is the second gauge definitely an electrical one? The 'thick copper wire' could be a capillary tube. Any pictures.

Does the 'thick copper wire' have a sensor bulb on the end ??

If it's an electrical gauge or a cappilary type, the sensors both fit here, this is my new capillary gauge fitting.[frame]Image[/frame]

Sorry about the pic quality :-?
There should be a blanking plug there if a sender hasn't already been fitted.

on the digital, the green goes to the sensor, black to ground, red to power source (switched)

On closer inspection it looks like the copper wire has had the end cut off...does this mean that it is not usable now?
Also regarding the digital guage..the red wire connects to a switchable power source..as in ignition on off source?

Fraid it's scrap. And yes - it goes to the stabilised power supply on the back of the speedo - the one feeding the fuel gauge. All this of course on a 1098 engine - the 948 doesn't have a port for the sensor - or a stabilised power supply...... Both challenges can be overcome of course.

Mine is a 1098 car with a 948 engine fitted so would I still be able to take that feed from the speedo :-?

Does the speedo have a black or gold face?

Ok - but you won't have the port in the head for the sensor.... If you can find a Mini 998 head (CAM 4180) that's a straight fit (and slightly unleaded) and will have the port. Otherwise a 12G 202 head (ex 1098 engine) and skim it 60 thou before fitting. Is it really worth all the hassle ? Why do you want to know the temperature ? I've managed the last 20 years or so with my Minor without a temperature gAUge.

A black faced gauge (and fuel gauge) has the voltage stabiliser readily fitted to the rear of the speedometer.

You could fit a sensor in the top hose using a cut-down bottom hose with the heater take off instead.
Some excellent ideas on this thread.
