Identifying & checking dynamo & starter

I recently bought a job lot of Morris bits, among them is a couple of dynamos, starter motors and a few wiper motors.
The chap said they were from an earlier Minor & mines a 1966 1098 saloon. I know some had clap hand wipers, but did the starter motors & dynamos change & how can I tell if these will be suitable spares for my car.
Also how can I test them to make sure they work? Should I just apply 12v from a car battery & see if they spring into action?

Yes for the starter - hold it down with your foot! Use jump leads. Join the two terminals of the dynamo and again - hold it down and apply power. If any use it will run as a motor. And yes it should be possible to test the wiper motors by applying power.

Great stuff, thanks. Did the starters and dynamos change over the years, or do they all fit and work on a 1098?

Early ones were C39 but were superseded by the C40 with the 1098 I believe. They are distinguished from each other by the terminals, the former using brass ring terminals to connect, the latter using conventional Lucar connectors.
Either will work just as well in a Minor however.

Just had a look and I have one C39 which looks in decent nick and a C40 which looks a bit ropey, but I've not tested either of them yet.
Are all starter motors the same?

The date of manufacture and voltage should be stamped on the body of the dynamo or starter eg 10/58, 12V

The starter design changed over the years - but all fit any standard Minor.
