daft question

hi all
this might be a daft question but im looking to work on my motor while the ign needs to be on
best to disconnect the coil wires to save it?

Yes it is best to disconnect the coil, it will overheat if the points are closed
Disconnect the one that goes to the distributor then there is not a live wire lift dangling.

Why do you need the Ign on?
If it's just one circuit you're trying to work on, why not power it directly from the battery, via a suitable fuse of course.
I can't imagine what you're doing if you require the whole thing powered up....
