Apologies for bringing this one up again.
Firstly. 1969 Traveller.

Recently installed a new column switch indicator unit. I had to extend the wires due to it being now LHD. Although the external flashers worked satisfactory, the indicator stalk did not. It used to, even with the old unit, only flash after about 30 seconds, before that it just stayed alight. Then it stopped working altogether. As before the external indicators worked fine, albeit perhaps a slower flasher pause.

I installed a new FL5 unit and it worked perfectly for half an hour and then conked out. i.e the indicator stalk neither lit nor flashed although the outside was ok as ever.

Now I know it is said that the modern flasher units are not the quality that they were but has anyone an idea what else I might need to investigate before riskinga new unit again?

Perhaps a short? Disconnect wires from flasher unit and remove bulbs from external units, then use a multimeter to check all wires at both switch and flasher ends for an earth connection - there shouldn't be any connection other than on the black earth wire. Check that earth wires have zero resistance to earth

Thanks for the tip. Have now checked for earth connections as advised and found none. Waiting for the new relay to arrive and try again. Having had faulty units before is too easy an option......

Hi , try to find a NOS flasher relay ... open up a old one versus a new one ..... say no more ...

Check Earth to body.

The flasher relay may be bolted to the chassis for suppoert but this is not meant to be an earth connection, or?

New Unit arrived and installed - working as it should. Strangely, it looks bigger than what was in before........

I have a couple of minor flasher cans in my spares box and one is larger than the other! The larger one appears to be more substantially made.
Maybe from a different tin hut in a faraway place

I have a Durite, black plastic, flasher unit in my car. It's worked reliably for six years now after I had several of the metal can 'Lucas' units fail in the space of a few months.

Open up the failed unit... then open up a old Lucas one.

They are a work of art inside.
