C39 Armature

Post by Andymoor94 »

Hi guys,

So a brush in my dynamo broke, and with it, pulled apart a good portion of the armature and ruined it.
I've found C40 armatures for sale online and was wondering if there is any reason why I couldn't fit one of those into my C39 instead? I understand that it has a 22A output, which is higher than the C39, but I'm not sure what that means as a result!

cheers

I do not see any reasons why the C40 armature listed on line could not be used in a C39 dynamo.
Make sure that the C40 armature is not a C40L armature as the C40L armature/dynamo is longer.

Good question

This website would support Phil's belief. https://www.charnleys.com/part/leyland- ... -lucas-c39

However, I have seen some chat in forums that the C39/C40 had different armatures
See the 3rd comment down this page: https://www.britishcarforum.com/bcf/sho ... es-not-fit

They also have different brush sizes.
The C39 brushes are 6.35 x 19.05 x 15.9mm.
The C40 brushes are 5.5 x 19.05 x 18.2mm.

So I guess opinion is divided.

Great forum post there - I'd have been livid if I got the armature and it didn't fit!
I've just noticed the field coils are also damaged from the failure. I'm under the impression now that with the need for new armature, new field coils and new brushes, I may aswell just do an alternator conversion. Actually appears to be cheaper!

I don't know about 'cheaper', but it's quite close.
