Twin H1 carbs, possibly for sidevalve engine - identification help needed please.

Post by Potts »

Hi MM Owners,

I've recently taken on my recently passed uncle's Mk1 Midget (948cc). Among the bundle of new parts, he had a pair of fully serviced SU H1 carb's (receipt shows the service cost him £214!). The Mk1 Midget has HS2s, so I've been trying to find out why he had these ready for the Midget. I've discovered that the 948cc MK1 Sprite had twin H1s, so it's possible that he intended to have this setup on his Mk1 Midget. The chap now restoring my HS2s said that these H1s would not have been suitable for the Sprite/Midget, as the float chambers are horizontal (not 20 deg) and they also have an unusual inlet manifold. After a few days contacting his fellow carb restoration pals, they have collectively suggested that these H1s were probably made for the early Morris Minor sidevalve engine. Having looked at a few MM sidevalve engines with twin H1s, some have them mounted slightly different to my setup, though I've also seen examples where they're mounted the same.

Ultimately, I want to sell the H1s and it would be easy just to list them on eBay. However, I'd like them to go to the appropriate ownership/the appropriate vehicle. Of course, I'll list them in the For Sale group, but can anyone please shed any light, do they look familiar? Do you have a totally different take on them? It'd be really interesting to find out.

Many thanks,
Richard

Interesting acquisition!
I bought a pair of HS1's for my sidevalve which I was told came from a Sprite (in Portugal!) however the float chambers were inclined at 30deg (I thought)
They also didn't have the interconnection pipe that yours has.
Can't think of the name of the Company but they used to sell tuning parts for the sidevalve which included an inlet manifold for the pair of HS1's.
I constructed my own manifold stubs and did a write-up on here at the time.

Thank you for commenting Alan!

I've done a bit of digging and this image from RobThomas 11 years ago (here on MMOC) shows a similar kind of setup to my manifold. Fifth post down:

I notice the photos of your conversion too. The stubs look really good!

I've just noticed that you have a Series MM discussion board, do you think I should post there instead?

Series MM might be a more appropriate place!
Someone's interest might be stirred enough to do a bit of experimentation!
