spin on oil filter

Post by RogerRust »

I have fitted the kit from ESM. I'm about to do an oil change and need a new filter.
Do you know what I should ask for in the car spares shop? Is it the same as a mini ? if so what year should I ask for?
It seems silly paying for delivery from ESM.

I've just looked up Fram PH966B which was what came with the kit on the web and it says Ford Escort - is that correct?

Thanks Roger

Fram PH966B is a Ford XLD series oil filter (Escort zenith, small cortina zenith engines)

there's always the fallback option - get down to Halfords where the stock is on the shelf and comapre the old one to the new one to be 100% sure. (sealing diameter and thread size)
If you can't get there with your car in bits then Halfords will let you change pretty much anything if you 'bought the wrong one by accident' so buy it and compare at home.

Fram PH966B is the standard filter for a whole range of cars but if you ask for an oil filter for a mini you will be fine! :D

the PH966B is for FRAM filters. That might help

I know that my '79 Mini 1000 (998cc) and my '85 Mini City E (also 998cc) had the same filters if that's any help. Actually, so did my 1977 1275 GT engine, and the 850. Oh and thinking about it, the two A-reg ('83) Minis. Just not the VERY early ones and the VERY late ones probably. 70s or 80s ones should be fine.

If it's any help I can tell you that the filter from a spin on kit definitely DOES NOT fit the same thread size as that from a 1275 Ital. The spin on kit has a bigger thread.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

If the filter you are replacing has a maker and makers type/part number printed on it that should be enough for any decent motor factor to identify by cross referencing to the make of filters they stock. They should have a decent enough catalogue to achieve this.
Both my 1098cc engined cars have spin on conversions, not necessarily the same as those ESM supply but the spin on filters ESM do supply are Fram PH966B, as mentioned in your opening post. So logically they would fit their kit??
I'd get that or it's equivalent from a motor factor, try it CAREFULLY first before throwing any oil or oily fingers at it just in case it's not correct!!

I got my spin on filter housings from 70's 80's Mini's in scrap yards. The ones that fit the Minor 1000 block is definitely for a Mini.

When you order a service kit from ESM/Bull Motif/whoever, just ask them for a Mini spin on oil filter instead of the paper and they allways send the right one.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO
