Identify engine number
I have a 1958 four door 1000. Chassis number tallys with the cars known history, However, the engine number is 199215 (on the bulkhead plate and on the engine) just figures, no letters shown but there does appear to be a decimal point before the number.
Although this was originally a 948cc car, I believe that this engine is a 1098cc
Does anyone have any ideas where this engine could have originated ? Or the reason for no prefix letters on the number ?

Re: Identify engine number
Engine number (type 9MAUH) fits for Mid 1958ish (chassis in 62****ish).
Would you please email me pics of chassis and engine ID plates; pommreg@gmail.com
Also, please quote body number - top NSF of engine bay B/head.

Re: Identify engine number
Did suspect a reproduction plate owing to the engine number also being on there, expect SEE ENGINE.
Despite the expense with the "engraving", pretty pointless as the font is all wrong - virtually impossible to re-stamp to the original spec - and I don't know why concours judges don't deduct points for it(but that's me being a bit picky!).
This worries me, have you located the stamped(into the bodyshell) chassis number?
Body number too.
Cheers

Re: Identify engine number
Chassis number is also missing a digit.
Engine will have '950' cast into the block if it is a 948, '1100' if it is a 1098.

Re: Identify engine number
Tks for the response people, where on the block will the engine size be found ? And where would the chassis number be stamped ? Many tks
Re: Identify engine number
Hi everyone, have just closely examined the engine etc, the following marks are on the left hand side (manifold) of the block
Front of engine - C. 8FO. Centre of engine - MOWOG. Rear of engine - 12A. With. 497. Below the 12A
Chassis No plate between the radiator and inner wing has been damaged and no number showing
Have we got a rogue car here ?

Re: Identify engine number
This is the body number; NMP plate; first "flat" should start with Z22****, 2nd R13****.
This number also repeated at the top of the ns B/head (below bonnet hinge) with an additional BMH plate.
The chassis number is stamped into the bodyshell around the bonnet pull rod hole...
Google Morris Minor chassis number images, show you where to look/scrape!

Re: Identify engine number
I'm fairly happy with the chassis number, my real interest is in the engine number, did anyone recognise the mouldings on the engine block ? - I really need to know the size of the engine ie 1098cc or 948cc, many tks
Re: Identify engine number
Floor panels have been replaced, so no numbers there, I think there has been a number beside the bonnet release cable on the bulk head but this is unreadable ((even after scraping) someone has I think obliterated it. The chassis number and the engine number are the same as above on all the DVLA paperwork (change of ownership and registration number) documented all the way back to 1964.

Re: Identify engine number
Do you have a body number (top of nsf b/head), gearbox or rear axle number.
Glass is dated too.
Confirm whether 1958

Re: Identify engine number
It is 1958, I have just looked under the rocker cover, cylinder head is 12G202
Gearbox is ribbed type
No body number - has a new plate on the bulkhead (see above photos)
Would the cylinder head and gearbox point to 1098cc ?

Re: Identify engine number
Hi,
I have a spare minor engine with the number 260396 etched on it. Is is possible to trace where it came from?

Re: Identify engine number
I would say no.
The engine number should be reversed stamped on the engine plate not etched.

Re: Identify engine number
948 or 1098?
For UK cars, non-CKD
9M 260396 is approx late 1958
10M 260396 is approx mid 1967

Re: Identify engine number
I still think that you are asking an impossible question!
It makes no difference as to whether it is a 948cc or 1098cc engine if the original engine number is not there the question is near impossible to answer.
The only sure thing is that the engine was made by the BMC engine works way back.
For all things 'A' Series engine wise you need to look through the book in the attached link.

Re: Identify engine number
Have 2 UK Minor's listed on the database with STAMPED engine numbers - although NOT etched - would imagine the reasoning was to ensure the engine was returned to the correct customer following rebuild/reconditioning(?).
Maybe worth confirming engine size & contacting Richard at BMHT for details of the vehicle it came from?

Re: Identify engine number
Engine re-conditioning companies some times stamp the engine number directly into the block. The stamped number may or not be the original BMC engine number. Many engine re-conditioning companies stamp the engine number with a number devised by themselves to identify the engine as having been reconditioned as them so eliminating any arguments as to who reconditioned the engine if a warranty claim is raised.
Here is a link to a classic mini engine that has has a non BMC/BL engine number stamped directly into the block:-
