Does anyone know if it possible to remove the raised reflector from the badge without damaging it? M

Yes, it is clipped in by three little tabs on the reflector. It can be gently prized out (I did on mine) but there is the risk, of course, that after 63 years the plastic has become brittle so be very careful.

Thanks. I will try that. I saw the clips and realised that age is a danger.

Yes I think I pushed the clips out from behind, a little at a time, with a very small screwdriver, if I recall correctly. It was a while ago now.

And if it won't clean up to be reflective, someone else on this forum found a BMW door reflector that works well (with a tiny bit of circumference reduction!). Not quite the right curvature, and it will need to be glued in.

948 rear lights also have a suitable reflector built in but you need to get smashing to release it. A bit of polishing and some filing down will get a decent copy made by Lucas Reflex and devoid of any BMW content.

If the original reflector looks dull, it can be freshened up by a little T-cut and polishing off! 8)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was going to t cut the reflector to give more shine. I have reflectors on replacement lights which makes its use as a warning - redundant!

I replaced mine with a stick in version as the original was bleached pink presumably due to UV

OK well if you just want to T-cut it you can do that without even removing the reflector. It comes up quite quickly.

Sorry, but the whole movement idea is to put my old reflector on a better badge, mine being dull and very badly pitted. Not much one can do with Mazak. M

Ah yes, I see. Actually that thought occured to me earlier this morning. Its just that my badge was OK, if not perfect, so decided to keep it on the basis of originality. The T-cut does bring the reflector up nicely though........

If you're going to remove the whole badge from the car, you could try something I used to do to keep the Mazak trim on my Austin A50 looking good. Apply a paste type chrome polish (e.g. Autosol) carefully, using VERY fine grade steel wool instead of a cloth. You may have to buff (cloth) and repeat a couple of times before you see much improvement. Finally polish with a solid (not liquid) wax. Might be worth a try if you plan on replacing the badge anyway.
My Austin was never garages and was my daily driver. I'd have do the above perhaps 3 times a year.
I do the same now with Max but some of his brightwork is poor quality stuff from overseas and needs attending to almost monthly.

Thanks for the tip. That should work on the handles! I will try that. M
