By chance (almost) I discovered my car has an NMP plate in the engine bay floor. It was dirty but cleaned up well enough to read the number. What does the number actually mean? It is Z15491.2

It is indeed a four-door. First registered January 1955, so may well have been built in 1954.
So how did you decipher the 'code'?

The "Z" number is the bodyshell code, gives the rough build year/months.
BMF number narrows it to month(s)

OK ..so how is it de-coded? I get '54' for year, or even '4' for 4-door in there (but not both at the same time, of course), but I don't get the significance of all the numbers....

Do I have your car's details?

Over 150 body codes used.

For each bodyshell, allocated a code by NMP, differing on each varient.

This code defines age/model, if, for example it were "Z31234" it would be a 1962 Minor.

The BODY number - the set of nos. to the right - whittles the build date to within 2mths.

Believe me, it's quite a simple system.
