LCU 476H blue 2 door

Post by Mick Lynch »

Interesting to see if this old beauty is still on the road.
It was my wife’s first car (she passed her driving test in it).
We were living in Newcastle - photo from about 1991.

She sold it in 1994 when she got a Wolseley 444
We emigrated to Canada in December 2008 and the last country fair we went to before leaving the country was the then local Otterburn Show where we saw the car and spoke to the new owner - a lady from South Tyneside.

I presume you can access these sites from outside the UK, I can't think of a reason you shouldn't.

https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla

The last V5c (logbook) was issued 18 April 2012, so probably sold then, or owner moved house.
It's just been re-taxed and MOT'd, so still very much alive and well.

If you go to the MOT Check website, it's been regularly MOT'd since 2006, so not been laid up for any significant length of time.

Good to know it’s still out there. I was aware of the DVLA site but thought I needed the V5.
I just spent an hour checking all my old cars... strangely the goodwifes Wolseley is ‘not known’. She had it from 94 through to about 2007 when it became apparent we were leaving.

What a coincidence I thought about it the day t was retaxed

A bit of detective work... the photo may be a couple of years later. The giveaway is the white Vauxhall Corsa in the background, as this model was launched in 1993  There's a nice red Ford Escort Mk3/4 on there as well. I can't remember the last time I saw one of those driving around. You'll see more Morris Minors on the roads here these days than Ford Escorts! Glad to hear your old Morris is still alive and well :D

There are a couple of reasons the Wolseley would be showing as ‘not known’. The registration mark could have been changed to a personal 'private' plate or it may have been scrapped. However, it will usually still show on the MOT check site even if it has been scrapped.

I’d go with that, could be up to 1994 as that when we moved out.

Car was too good to scrap (in 2007 anyway)

That's a really great looking car, certainly seems very unlikely it would have been scrapped.

It had an interesting original registration mark in 2007. My guess is that at some point after you sold it, a later keeper has removed the original TTT223 mark and put it on a retention certificate. If this is the case then it won't show on either the tax or MOT check sites. You may well find that the original mark re-appears on another vehicle in the future. The Wolseley is probably still very much alive and well, but will have been allocated an 'age related' registration mark. For pre-1963 vehicles they usually follow the '3-letters 3-numbers' format. However, it makes it rather difficult to find out if a car you used to own is still about :-?

Personally, I think a bit sad when a vehicle looses it's original registration mark, because this is part of its identity. Especially when there is a lot of history and documentation associated with the original mark. e.g. old logbooks, MOT's, Service documents, etc. Some other people take a different view. I suppose it depends how much you value the history and originality.

If you're interested there's a great site you can search which provides statistics about cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles registered in the UK.

Apparently there are 204 Wolseley 4/44's currently taxed or SORN in the UK :D
