NFO 668 white 2 door

Post by Mick Lynch »

Whatever happened to this likely lad?
I checked the DVLA site and it’s recorded as green and last V5 in 2000

Bought this in 1995 in Blaydon, Tyne & Wear from a second hand car dealer who said the previous owner was Chris Pattern, then governer of Hong Kong. Original reg was 424 MAE (how could this be confirmed?)

1961 Morris 1000, white, red interior, was my everyday car from 1995 until 2000. It took us all round Northumberland, the Borders, Cheviots and Cumbria. Used to suffer a commute from Chollerford to Wallsend in Newcastle 5 days a week. Was brilliant on the A, B roads and country lanes.

Had to let it go as I started working at the BAE shipyard in Scotstoun Glasgow and needed a car that could cope better with the Motorways. Swapped it for a brand new Fiat Punto (that had nowt but bother with head gaskets for the 8 years I owned it).

Sold the Minor, taxed and MoT’d to a guy in Cramlington who was going to restore it in 2000. Saw it by chance in 2001, bonnetless, engineless, bootless, no petrol tank or exhaust outside a ‘Sports Car Specialist’ in Swalwell about 2 miles from where I originally bought it. It was still white at that time.

B+W photos because work had a darkroom and I got into developing my own photos for a wee while...

Wondering if it’s still out and about or it’s ultimate fate.

How could you confirm the previous owner was Chris Pattern or how could you confirm the original reg was 424 MAE ?
Copies of the previous registration documents or keeper history should answer both questions. Only the current keeper has the entitlement to request that information from DVLA. At least that was the case until about 3 years ago, but that's another argument

If it's not been taxed since March 2001 and you last saw it partly dismantled, then it doesn't look promising. May be the guy you sold it to back in 2000, ran it for 12 months and then decided not to proceed with a restoration. That said, it seems strange someone would go to the trouble of changing the colour, only to break it for parts :-? Sometimes these cars can reappear years later, so you never know. Hopefully someone else on here will recognise the registration and can provide more information on its fate.

Reg 424 MAE is currently on a 2008 Range Rover.

DVLA don't reveal much history these days, even to Current Keepers.
When a Current Keeper requests the info, you only get copies of the past log books with the names and addresses redacted except for the Town or County.
So when I applied for Basil's, I could track his general movements around the country like Lincolnshire and Portsmouth, plus his change of registration when his original number was retained as a 'Cherished Number', and the subsequent change when a previous owner got the random 1964 'A' plate changed to an 'Age Related'. But that's it.

You were lucky to get that much! The last time I requested a full keeper history, which is the current keepers entitlement, I received a copy of one logbook. This had all the address details redacted, so not even the town or county showing. They even redacted the mileage the previous keeper had filled in when returning the logbook :o

Personally, it seems to me that they are being pushed into taking an over-zealous approach when dealing with these sort of requests, and I've yet to see anything convincing that would remove the current keepers entitlement to the information. I wonder how long before they reach the point, when they won't even put the current keepers name and address on the logbook

It's a serious point though. How do you ever check the provenance of a vehicle if they won't release its history?

If a car is scrapped or permanently exported does that flag up on the DVLA database?

Only if the person doing so does it properly. Nothing to stop someone taking or sending a car out of the country.
Cars scrapped more recently may be subject to stricter controls, but you don't have to go back far to find there were no strict controls in place, Scrapies were a law unto themselves.

I used to own a Mitsubishi Spacewaggon
I sold it in 2005
The DVLA show it as Tax Due 1 Aug 2005
Yet also shows last V5C issued 10 March 2006

I know the guy who brought it was Polish and he actually called me from Poland with some question about 'had the fuel injectors ever been changed' because he was getting an LPG conversion done on it. I see no reason for him to have ever come back from Poland with it....

Another former car of mine, A light blue Vauxhall Viva I brought new in 1977, sold in the mid 80s, now shows on the database as being Red, a New V5C issued 13 April 1992, but Tax being due 27 April 1992.. :-? :-?
I thought the Tax always went to the end of the month?

Finally, a car that I personally drove to the Breakers about 25 years ago, and correctly did the paperwork for, shows as "Vehicle details could not be found"

My experience is the same as geoberni's. In the years before 'Certificates of Destruction' (COD's) came in to use, several of my cars went to the scrappies. Always ticked 'scrapped' and sent the V5 back to Swansea, but they still show up on a vehicle search. The only cars that show as "Vehicle details could not be found" had COD's issued for them. I'm also convinced there are a lot of cars that have been SORN and un-officially scrapped/broken up, so they will simply appear as SORN forever. Also seen several UK registered cars abroad, which have obviously been laid up for many years and quite possibly never officially exported.

Regarding the 'tax due date' being part way through a month. I believe this is because the tax disc was surrendered on that date. There was no requirement to SORN before 1998.
