At last I managed to uncover the true colour beneath the multiple paint layers as shown in Pics, could anyone please advice on how to get the exact same colour?

One other thing, what colour is the central part (seen in the photo below) I mean the part where you insert the key and light switch ect?

Mark the gold paint you need for the dash is available from all the normal parts suppliers (ESM for example). The central part of the dash should be the same gold colour with the aluminium top finisher panel.

Thanks Lee, but I still have a problem, since I live abroad I cannot order aerosols, so I kindly need some kind of paint code so I could order locally.

I've spoken to ESM parts department and the only paint code they have listed for the Gold Dash paint is TOY4C3??? I'm guessing a Toyota colour!

I found many contrasting pics, some have the central part gold and the others silverish, What does the morris bible say about this?

I ordered some TOY4c3 paint! in an aerosol can hope this is it I'll post some pics when I use it...thanks

As far as I know it doesn't.

This is a good example of why I am so keen to preserve good original cars as far as possible.

Before I say anymore, any ideas?

Well, maybe I got the answer. When I stripped down the central piece(where the key and lightswitch etc are fixed), the last colour to be stripped was silver/ grey.

This could mean two things,

1 it has been stripped before and recoated in grey

2 the true original colour is grey.

Since the other dash parts are recoated without being completely stripped, I might assume with a certain degree of certainty that the central part is actually and originally silver/grey

those in favour?


Was any part of the steering column or steering wheel ever painted originally in gold as well?

I think you've cracked it Mark Now try stripping a part of the steering column, wheel centre, and mounting bracket and see what you find

My UK assembled '48 has this piece in a dull silver finish whereas my Australian assembled '50 has this in the gold.
Both had the original finish when I bought the cars (the '50 still has).

Back to this subject, so it looks that both colours co-existed originally. Would be interesting to know exactly if there was a cutoff date say for the silver colour or the other way round.

IMHO Esthetically the 'all gold' scheme looks better,

For the record, its silver on my '49 and gold on my '53 car. Given the previous postings it would indicate that the older cars were silver then they went onto gold. But its a production line so whatever was available on the day went on I suppose.
Incidentally the golds on the steering wheel and the heater are diffenrt to the dash, which I guess is bought in components. I suppose asking for paint codes for those is a little optimistic....

My late '49 (registered January 1950) has a gold dash.

So much for that theory then. Must have been one of those random production line things....
