Series MM Engine Number Location

Post by POMMReg »

As the topic title suggests....

WHERE is this id plate located, and can one be replicated using
reversed stamping?

VERY important atm, so any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Chris.

The engine number is usually stamped on a circular brass plate riveted to the block behind the dynamo. The plate can also be found on the flywheel housing at the back of the engine. On USHM3 engines it is also stamped on the face of the block in front of the cylinder head. I will try to get some photos

I am from Malaysia and in the process of restoring my tourer.
The circular brass plate on my engine is missing and i need one in order to clear the car from trouble by authorities.

Scrape the paint off the top of the block above the water pump blanking plate, it may be stamped on there.
Can you send me the details of the car, chassis no etc, it may be on my records. Do you know the engine number?

sometimes the number on the top is gone after a revision, but one of my engines has a re stamped number on another place.
When you know the number for sure, it is only look at the engine if they have put it somewhere else.

Why do Malaysia require a matching engine number to issue a registration - all other numbers match?

Would they accept a letter from the MMOC to confirm all is legal?

Had a similar scenario for one in the USA - that was settled by a brief explanation and a letter.

You have an engine number, it may not be the same engine as you have now but the authorities do not know that. If you can enlarge the photo of the engine disc then an engraver should be able to copy it. Problem solved.

May be easier to fit a blue replacement plate id - square and less complicated?

Personally, I'd use a brass key fob with appropriate engine number stamped - riveted in and "aged".

If some engines have it stamped on the front of the block, then why not get it stamped on there anyway.
While that bare metal stamping is rusting/ageing, ready to be painted and rediscovered, continue to try and find/create a similar round plate to fit the other number position. Must be something around is similar.
