Ay my spare engine no 3, I see a different oil filter house, is this original, or do I need to replace it by one of my other spares?[frame][/frame]
They modified more, also the ignition is different ;)[frame][/frame]
But I have a spare filter (housing)[frame][/frame]

Re: Oil filters sidevalve
There were two oil filters fitted to the USHM3 engine, AC and Purolator
You have a later distributor with vacuum advance either a DM2 or 25D

Re: Oil filters sidevalve
The distributor is not original, but with some luck, I have enough parts to put an original back.
When the AC filter is original, he may stay ;)
Because the oil in the engine is complete clean, and a new box with old pistons and piston rings was with the car, it is possible they started with the engine.
Also the top from the engine looks cleaned, the engine number is not visible/readable any more on the top.
So I will check the filter, if he is also new, and try to start him to check his condition.
They started restoration about 25 years ago, and sold the car more than 10 years ago to this owner.
Because of the position from the engine, when I bought the car, he was not touched the past 10 years, all the dust and rust were from that time.
The only thing is now, when this was the first MM for me, this was a better base as the other, but now my time machine is a problem, and not enough work space for working on 2 cars.
When they are both ready, it will fit.
And, also important, this car has matching numbers too.
At least I make him as complete as possible, when I do not have enough time, another enthusiast can start.

Re: Oil filters sidevalve
Just opened the filter housing.
No gasket, no filter, but half filled with old clean oil.
Looks like the filter housing is not removed after painting.
Is the filter element for the AC the same as the Purolator?

Re: Oil filters sidevalve
The purolator is the most common filter and the element is the same as 948/1098. I am not sure about the AC, the bowl looks bigger, perhaps someone who has one will be able to tell us. I avoid changing the rubber ring. I remove the complete filter from the engine block (5/16 Whit spanner) then separate the filter bowl (plug socket). The plate and spring should be held in place by a spring clip so that it should not get lost. After emptying and cleaning the bowl I fit the new filter, fill with new oil, reassemble and refit to the engine.

This looks like, it is the best way to change the filter housing by the Purolator one ;)
When I take from the engine, it is easy to replace him in the same way.
