A low-light on eBay
I've kept this notification off "cars for sale" as no discussion is allowed in that forum.
Has anyone noticed this latest "barn find", even thought the seller has had it "not in a barn" for ages.

PommReg and Mike Perry - do you know of this one.
George.

Re: A low-light on eBay
Don't record regns, leave MM's to Mike as my knowledge of them is virtually zero.
DO collect their chassis/body/engine numbers though.

Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

Re: A low-light on eBay
"no respray to preserve originalality"??
It has late doors so it's probably had a repaint somewhere along the line, maybe when they fitted the later engine...

Scott, this engine looks pretty early to me with no water pump - are you referring to the fact that it has a blanking plate for fitting a pump, rather then a plain solid casting?Scott wrote: ... maybe when they fitted the later engine...

Re: A low-light on eBay
The early cars didn't have the escutcheons around the door handles. This car has them so it has later doors fitted. It's not a big issue as there's not too many early doors around but when you're advertising the car as having original paint, then it's a clue that some body work has been done.XWL61 wrote:To the uninitiated, whats the difference between early and later doors?Scott wrote:It has late doors so it's probably had a repaint somewhere along the line, maybe when they fitted the later engine...

Re: A low-light on eBay
The water jacket at the side is the first major difference. Don't get me wrong as it's great to see a lowlight retaining a sidevalve engine but it's not the original type for this car.gtt1951 wrote:Scott, this engine looks pretty early to me with no water pump - are you referring to the fact that it has a blanking plate for fitting a pump, rather then a plain solid casting?Scott wrote: ... maybe when they fitted the later engine...

Re: A low-light on eBay
Getting the actual car number would be nice as it has the very early firewall crossmember (dished slightly behind the engine) & appears to have sharp gutters.
if it is indeed in the 4000 series of numbers, it would place it in the first 50 of known survivors according to the MM register.

Re: A low-light on eBay
As the seller has only owned the car for a year then it is quite probable that he is not aware of what is original. The engine is a USHM3 but it has the benefit of an oil filter, absent on the erliest engines and a pity about the tail lights. Can you not retro fit the escutcheon plates?

I notice the battery isn't secured - is the car roadworthy?
Request Body number & ditto on NMP plate.

Re: A low-light on eBay
I would assume not as the seller claims it has been driven half a mile in 30years I think? It was last taxed in 1983!POMMReg wrote:I notice the battery isn't secured - is the car roadworthy?
The block of wood under a wheel suggests to me that the brakes don't work. An expensive fix on a "MM" and I guess all the tyres will be perished......
I know that a car of that age doesn't need to pass an MOT but it should still be of a standard where it COULD, if it is to be used on the roads!

Re: A low-light on eBay
I thought the new rules state you must have an MOT when you sell the car?

Certainly the first I've heard of it. Lots of illegal sales on ebay if it IS the case!

Re: A low-light on eBay
You only need one of those if you wish to strip the original reg off a car.smithskids wrote:I thought the new rules state you must have an MOT when you sell the car?
You can sell a SORNed car, but then need to re-SORN it under your own name.
When I bought my '56 Traveller, it didn't even have a current SORN as the chap thought he only needed to do it once and not yearly - DVLA don't send reminders if you have missed SORNing (is there such a word?).

Re: A low-light on eBay
You only have to do it once now - unless the car changes ownership
