Rear Axle Issues

I had oil leaks from both rear seals so I fitted new ones (early MM style rear axle). After only a few hundred miles the LH side has started weeping a little again. I was wondering about the collars on the axle - these seem to turn independently of the shaft on the RH side, but on the LH side the collar turns with the shaft. are these collars meant to spin or stay still? Looking at the inside of the drum there is a chamfered recess for the collar to press into which I presume will spin them anyway? Anyone know much about this?

The inner lip of the seal should be against the rotating 'part' and the outer edge of the rubber seal should be fixed to the hole it is sat in, if that makes sense.

You might salvage the seal by taking of the seal, getting the spring from the inside edge of the lip, unscrewing it (like a snake eating its' own tail, if THAT makes sense) and shortening the wider end a few mm to tighten it. A bit like shortening a belt round your waist.

The collars should be still and rotate with the 1/2 shaft. When you put the brake drum on they should tighten up. make sure the surface of the collars(sleeve) is clean and polished. sometimes the old seal goes hard and damages the surface where the seal runs.
